An August night of extra virgin oil, Val d'Agri flavours, humour and music
Montemurro is a small village in the Val d'Agri, in the province of Potenza, known for being the birthplace of the poet and engineer Leonardo Sinisgalli. Olive trees that produce high-quality extra virgin oil grow on its hills, and it is to this product that the village dedicates its most anticipated festival every summer: the Sagra dell'Olio Extravergine di Oliva.
For one evening, usually around August 11th, the streets of Montemurro's historic centre are transformed into an enogastronomic trail. Along the route, stalls offer tastings of local extra virgin oil and traditional Lucanian peasant dishes, from seasoned bread to specialities prepared by the village's housewives and restaurateurs. It is a celebration of authentic flavours, those that tell the story of the land and the hard work of those who cultivate it.
The festival is not just about food: the programme includes shows by comedians and humourists, live music and entertainment that accompany visitors along the entire route. A light-hearted and convivial atmosphere that, on August nights, fills the village with laughter and people, attracting returning emigrants and visitors from neighbouring towns.
Promoted by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Montemurro, the festival showcases a territory nestled in the National Park of the Lucanian Apennine Val d'Agri Lagonegrese, amidst nature, poetry, and tradition. A perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Basilicata and its flavours.
For 2026, the Sagra dell'Olio di Montemurro is expected in August, in line with recent editions that have set the date around August 11th. The event will again feature the enogastronomic trail through the historic centre, with tastings of extra virgin oil and traditional Lucanian dishes, shows by comedians, and live music. The official date will be confirmed by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Montemurro in the weeks prior.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks. Based on the established structure of the festival, the evening will include:
