The Albanian flavours of Ginestra in the first week of August
Ginestra is one of the five Arbëreshë municipalities in Basilicata, founded in the 15th century by Albanian refugees who arrived in the Vulture region. Its identity is preserved in its language, its rituals, and – above all – its cuisine, made up of ancient dishes that families have passed down through generations. The Sagra dei piatti tipici della cucina Arbëreshë is dedicated to this gastronomic heritage, a summer event in the village in the province of Potenza.
The festival is traditionally held in the first week of August, coinciding with the feast of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, the town's patron saint, venerated in the sanctuary of the same name. It is a time when the village fills with residents and emigrants who have returned for the summer, and when the specialities of Albanian tradition – handmade pasta, wild herbs, peasant dishes – are offered for tasting along the streets of the historic centre, accompanied by music and festive moments.
Participating in the festival is a way to immerse yourself in a living and little-known culture: the traditional costumes, the Arbëreshë language, the Mother Church of San Nicola, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, and the landscapes of the Vulture, among vineyards and extinct volcanoes. An authentic experience in the heart of a village that makes its diversity a richness to be shared.
In 2026, the Sagra dei piatti tipici della cucina Arbëreshë will once again return to Ginestra in the first week of August, intertwined with the feast of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, the town's patron saint. Along the streets of the historic centre, you can taste specialities of Albanian tradition, accompanied by music and celebrations. The precise dates will be confirmed by the organizers.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Ginestra in the weeks leading up to the event. The traditional structure includes:
