The patronal festival of Ripacandida, the "little Assisi" of Basilicata
Nestled on a hill at the foot of Monte Vulture, in the province of Potenza, Ripacandida holds a treasure that has earned it the nickname of "little Assisi": the Sanctuary of San Donato, a national monument since 2010, famous for its extraordinary cycles of 16th-century frescoes. It is around this place, and the figure of the patron saint, that the most heartfelt festival of the town revolves.
The Festa di San Donato honours San Donato da Ripacandida, a Benedictine monk who lived in the 11th century and is venerated as the patron saint of the village. His devotion, made of suggestions and tales of miracles, has linked the Ripacandida community to its saint for centuries, and is particularly felt by those who have emigrated and return to the village for the occasion. The heart of the festival are the religious celebrations and the procession with the statue of the saint, accompanied by the choral participation of the faithful.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the patronal festival offers three evenings of entertainment in the town centre, with music, shows, and moments of conviviality that fill the squares until late at night. The civil programme, organised by the Associazione Culturale San Donato of Ripacandida, alternates concerts, musical groups, and DJ sets over the years, transforming the small Lucanian village into a meeting point for the entire surrounding area.
Visiting Ripacandida during the San Donato festival means combining the spirituality of the sanctuary, the art of the frescoes, and the warm atmosphere of Southern Italian festivals. A perfect opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Vulture area and its flavours, from Aglianico wine to honey, another local excellence.
In 2026 too, Ripacandida celebrates its patron saint San Donato on the traditional days at the beginning of August, with the climax on August 7th. The programme alternates liturgical celebrations and the procession with the statue of the saint towards the Sanctuary, with evening entertainment events that liven up the town.
The complete civil programme, with artists and times, will be defined by the festival committee and the Associazione Culturale San Donato in the weeks preceding the event.
The festival traditionally spans three days (around August 5-7):
The detailed programme with the artistic line-up and times will be announced in the coming weeks on the channels of the festival committee and the Municipality.
How to get there: Ripacandida can be reached by car from Rionero in Vulture (about 10 minutes) and from the SS93; Rionero-Atella-Ripacandida station is the nearest railway reference point.
Tickets: the events of the patronal festival are free admission.
Tip: don't miss a visit to the Sanctuary of San Donato and its frescoes, a true jewel of the village.
