The festival of miskiglio in the Serrapotamo Valley
There is a dish that in Calvera, and in the nearby villages of the Serrapotamo Valley, is worth much more than a simple recipe: it is memory, identity, survival. It is miskiglio (or mischiglio), a dough made from mixed flours — soft wheat, broad beans, chickpeas, sometimes barley — which in past centuries allowed farmers to feed themselves when wheat was scarce because it was almost entirely destined for tax payments. From that necessity was born one of the most characteristic pastas of Basilicata, today a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT) and a Slow Food Presidium.
The Sagra dei Maccaruni cu Fierr is the way Calvera has chosen to celebrate this heritage: "maccaruni cu fierr" are pasta made by hand and rolled around a thin iron wire, seasoned with cacioricotta cheese and dried pepper flakes, according to the ancient taste of the Serrapotamo.
The festival is not an isolated event, but part of the La Via del Miskiglio project, a cultural route that unites four municipalities in the valley — Calvera, Teana, Fardella, and Chiaromonte — to jointly promote one of the oldest traditions of this land. The initiative, supported by the Basilicata Region, aims to make miskiglio not just a product to be tasted but a true shared intangible heritage, capable of connecting the villages and attracting visitors to an area of great natural beauty.
Calvera is a very small municipality in the Province of Potenza, immersed in the green of the Pollino, where the festival becomes an opportunity to gather in the narrow streets of the centre, taste dishes prepared according to ancient recipes, and experience the authentic hospitality of a Lucanian village. The event is organised by the Municipality of Calvera, the Pro Loco Calvera APS, and the association La Lente, with the involvement of local cooks who share the origins and secrets of miskiglio as you taste it.
An ideal appointment for those seeking the true flavour of inland Basilicata, far from the beaten paths, within a landscape that is itself part of the experience.
The event on August 10, 2026 confirms the vitality of the La Via del Miskiglio project, which already at the end of 2025, during the GustArte fair, recorded numerous bookings for Calvera's summer event. The absolute star is miskiglio in its various forms, from maccaruni cu fierr to rascatielli, prepared and explained by local cooks.
The day combines tasting and education: in addition to the food stalls, there will be sessions dedicated to the history and characteristics of this humble pasta, a symbol of Lucanian peasant cuisine and a shared heritage of the four municipalities of the Serrapotamo valley.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers in the coming weeks.
Based on previous editions of the La Via del Miskiglio project, the day typically includes:
How to get there: Calvera is reached from the SS653 della Valle del Sinni, heading towards the Serrapotamo Valley; the nearest airport is Bari, while the main train stations are Lagonegro or those in the Val d'Agri area.
Admission and tastings: the event is usually free to enter, with dishes available for purchase at the food stalls set up in the village.
Accommodation: for overnight stays, it is advisable to refer to the facilities in the nearby villages of Pollino and the Serrapotamo Valley.
