The Sagra dei Cavatelli is the summer gastronomic event of Macchia Valfortore, a municipality in the province of Campobasso located in the Fortore valley, on the border with Puglia and Sannio. Now in its twentieth edition and beyond, the sagra celebrates cavatello, a traditional handmade pasta, a symbol of Molise cuisine.
A Ferragosto and homecoming celebration
The sagra is held in Piazza S. Nicola in mid-August and is part of the village's summer events calendar, also designed for fellow citizens who have emigrated abroad as part of the Italea programme, the network dedicated to root tourism. During the sagra days, the village also offers visits to the ancient water mill and celebrations for the Madonna Assunta, in an intertwining of gastronomy, memory, and identity.
Macchia Valfortore and the Ecomuseum of the Fortore
The village houses an Ecomuseum dedicated to the home, trades, and culture of memory, which enhances the historical and cultural heritage of the local community. Participating in the Sagra dei Cavatelli is therefore also an opportunity to discover the traditions of the Molise Fortore.
Sagra dei Cavatelli — edition 2026
In 2026, Macchia Valfortore will again host its Sagra dei Cavatelli in Piazza S. Nicola, at the heart of the Ferragosto celebrations. The event is part of the municipality's summer events programme, also designed for fellow citizens who have emigrated abroad as part of the Italea programme for root tourism. The usual schedule includes cavatello tasting, a visit to the ancient water mill, and celebrations for the Madonna Assunta.
