The village's traditional Carnival, featuring allegorical floats, bean stew, and historic masks
In the heart of the Canavese region, just a few kilometers from Ivrea, the Romano Canavese Carnival is one of the most beloved winter events for this small village in the Province of Turin, Piedmont. For a few days, the town is transformed: confetti, streamers, masks, and music fill the streets of the historic center, and the entire community gathers around a celebration rooted in the area's rural traditions.
As per Canavese tradition, the Carnival revolves around its symbolic characters. The opening moment is the appointment of the Domina and the Console, the official masks who lead the festivities and represent the spirit of the village throughout the event. Around them, a program of events is designed to engage both adults and children.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats that winds through the streets of Romano Canavese: colorful, highly detailed structures, often built over months of hard work by local groups and associations, accompanied by masked groups and plenty of music. The parade attracts visitors from neighboring Canavese towns and is the most anticipated and photographed moment of the entire Carnival.
There is no Canavese Carnival without the charitable bean stew: a large dish of beans cooked in giant pots and distributed to the public, a popular and convivial tradition typical of Piedmont. The festival is completed with dance evenings and closes with the other great Romano specialty, the traditional polenta and cod, a convivial moment that marks the end of the festivities.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Romano Canavese, which has been active for decades in promoting the local area, the Carnival is above all a community celebration: an opportunity to gather, have fun, and pass on the traditions of the Canavese to new generations. Those who visit the village during this period will find a town that is vibrant, welcoming, and proud of its roots.
