The scattered independent music festival in the city of waterfalls
Rock in Liri is one of the most recognizable musical events in southern Lazio. It takes place in Isola del Liri, a town in the province of Frosinone famous throughout the region for its urban waterfall, the Cascata Grande, which plunges over twenty meters right in the middle of the town. This unique setting gives the festival its identity: stages are not concentrated in a single fenced area but distributed across the squares and spaces of the historic center, allowing the audience to walk from one concert to another while traversing the city.
The first edition dates back to 2014, when a group of local enthusiasts decided to bring independent music to an area historically underserved by major concert circuits. Since then, the initiative, curated by the Rock in Liri Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Isola del Liri, has grown year after year to become a staple of the Ciociaria summer, attracting spectators from across the province, lower Lazio, and nearby Campania.
The artistic direction is clear: rock and indie in a broad sense, with forays into singer-songwriter music, post-punk, electronic, and more experimental sounds. Over the years, the stages have hosted groups and artists highly regarded in the Italian alternative scene, systematically accompanied by emerging bands and local projects, to whom the festival always reserves slots on the bill.
Rock in Liri is not a festival of massive crowds and barricades: the scale remains that of a town party, with the roar of the waterfall as a constant bassline, bars and local businesses open late, and a diverse crowd mixing twenty-somethings, families, and enthusiasts who traveled specifically for the event. Admission is free, a choice maintained since the very first editions and championed by the organizers as part of the event's identity.
Isola del Liri owes its name to its position: the center literally stands on an island formed by the splitting of the Liri River, which here creates two waterfalls, the Cascata Grande and the Cascata del Valcatoio. Above the waterfall towers the medieval Boncompagni-Viscogliosi castle. Visitors arriving for the festival will find, beyond the concerts, a village to explore and a hinterlandโthe Ciociariaโrich in abbeys, such as Casamari and Montecassino, and traditional peasant cuisine that deserves a stop.
For those who follow Italian independent music, Rock in Liri represents a different way to experience a festival: no camping, no endless queues, just two evenings of free concerts in a historic center crossed by water, just over an hour from Rome. It is a format that over the years has convinced even artists accustomed to much larger stages, drawn by the idea of performing in a square just meters from a waterfall.
The 12th edition of Rock in Liri was held on June 26 and 27, 2026, in the historic center of Isola del Liri, in the province of Frosinone, confirming the scattered festival formula with free admission.
The opening night, Friday the 26th, focused on the main stage of Piazza Boncompagni starting at 9:00 PM. On Saturday the 27th, the event expanded to multiple points of the city from 6:00 PM, transforming squares and galleries into a continuous musical path crossed by the sound of the Cascata Grande.
As per tradition, the lineup alternated between established artists of the Italian independent scene and emerging projects, with a significant portion of DJ sets closing out the nights.

The stages are distributed throughout the historic center and can be reached on foot in a few minutes: it is advisable to leave your car in the peripheral parking lots, which are the only viable solution during festival evenings. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the center is hilly and cobblestoned. For accommodation, local options are limited to a few B&Bs and farmhouses: it is better to book in advance or look in Sora, Frosinone, or Fiuggi.
