Float parades, masked groups, and dance parties on the Ionian coast of Messina
Every winter, the Roccalumera Carnival fills the streets of this small town overlooking the Ionian Sea, in the province of Messina, with color, music, and joy. It is one of the community's most cherished traditions: for a few days, the town dresses up with masks, confetti, and allegorical floats, blending popular entertainment with local identity.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats that travel along Via Umberto I, the town's main artery, with stops in the local squares. Recent years have featured the Ciuminisi come Rio float and the Rocca Gipsy masked group, accompanied by entertainment such as the Lula Tribal Show with its fire performances. Roccalumera is part of the Ionian Carnival circuit, an event that networks floats and groups from neighboring towns — Santa Teresa di Riva, Furci Siculo, Nizza di Sicilia, Sant'Alessio Siculo, and Fiumedinisi — creating a widespread calendar of parades along the coast.
Alongside the parades, the Roccalumera Carnival offers creative workshops for children and dance evenings at the Giovanni Paolo II Social Center, featuring ballroom dancing, group dances, and the greatest hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The program is designed to engage all ages, from families with children to music and dance enthusiasts.
A town on the Ionian coast of Messina, Roccalumera is also known for its connection to the memory of the poet Salvatore Quasimodo, a Nobel Prize winner for literature. The Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of Sicily in a festive mood, amidst the scent of the sea and the warm atmosphere of town celebrations.
For the 2026 Carnival, Roccalumera offered a program from February 14 to 17 focused on dance evenings at the Giovanni Paolo II Social Center: ballroom dancing, group dances, and the greatest hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, in a festive atmosphere open to all ages. In 2026, the town also confirmed its participation in the Ionian Carnival circuit, the festival that brings together allegorical floats and masked groups from coastal towns in the Messina area, from Santa Teresa di Riva to Furci Siculo and Nizza di Sicilia.
Roccalumera also participated in the Ionian Carnival circuit, with allegorical float parades and masked groups shared with neighboring towns on the Ionian coast.
The parades take place along Via Umberto I, the main street of Roccalumera (ME), with stops in the town squares. Dance evenings are held at the Giovanni Paolo II Social Center.
By car: A18 Messina-Catania motorway, Roccalumera exit. By train: the Roccalumera-Mandanici station is on the Messina-Catania-Syracuse Ionian railway line. Roccalumera is approximately 35 km from Messina.
The event takes place during the Carnival period (February), with dates varying each year. It is recommended to check the updated program on the official channels of the Municipality of Roccalumera.
