About Pace di Dante

In October, Castelnuovo Magra, a village in the Val di Magra in the province of La Spezia, commemorates an event that forever links its name to Dante Alighieri: the Peace of Castelnuovo of October 6, 1306. Amidst medieval costumed figures, musicians, and flag-throwers, the village brings back to life the signing of the treaty where the supreme poet signed, as proxy for the Malaspina family, the agreement with the bishop-count of Luni.

Dante in Lunigiana

On October 6, 1306, Dante Alighieri, acting as proxy for Marquis Franceschino Malaspina, signed the peace treaty in the Bishop's Palace of Castelnuovo Magra with Antonio Nuvolone da Camilla, bishop-count of Luni. This is the so-called Peace of Castelnuovo (or Peace of Dante), one of the few documents that reliably attest to the poet's presence in a specific location during his exile, and an act that effectively marked the end of the Church's temporal power in Lunigiana.

The Re-enactment

To commemorate this episode, Castelnuovo Magra, a hilltop village in the Val di Magra in the province of La Spezia, organizes a historical re-enactment in costume. Figures in medieval attire, musicians, flag-throwers, and knights bring the historic center and the Bishop's Palace to life, recreating the atmosphere of the early 14th century and the solemnity of the treaty signing.

A Living Memory

The event is part of the strong bond that Castelnuovo Magra cultivates with the figure of Dante, also celebrated through Dantedรฌ and dedicated cultural initiatives. For visitors, it's an opportunity to discover a village rich in history, dominated by the tower of the bishop's castle, and to immerse themselves in a chapter of Dante's story directly linked to these borderlands between Liguria and Tuscany.
