The Nativity comes to life among the ancient workshops in the heart of Sicily
The Resuttano Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas traditions in the province of Caltanissetta, located in the geographical heart of Sicily. Established in 1998, the event has reached its twenty-seventh edition and has earned national recognition over the years, ranking among the best living nativity scenes in Italy. It is staged within the ancient stone dwellings of the historic district surrounding the Church of the Immaculate Conception, turning the entire village into a grand open-air stage.
Along the path, dozens of actors in period costumes recreate the Holy Family and the Nativity scene, nestled among the workshops of ancient trades. You can see furnara (bakers) pulling bread from ovens, picurara (shepherds) with their sheep, cistara (basket weavers) crafting wicker baskets, as well as scarpara (cobblers), lavannare (washerwomen), and virdurara (greengrocers) at work. It is a journey into the peasant and artisanal memory of the town, offering visitors an authentic glimpse of a bygone community.
One of the most appreciated aspects is the free tasting of local products offered along the route: pani di casa (homemade bread), ciciri caliati (toasted chickpeas), favi squadati (dried fava beans), pasta di casa (homemade pasta), and fresh ricotta. Ricotta is the star of the show on Epiphany, featuring a dedicated ricotta festival.
The highlight is January 6th, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men who complete the Nativity scene. The event maintains a strong religious and community focus: in January 2025, for the 25th anniversary, a solemn Mass was held with the participation of Bishop Monsignor Mario Russotto and Archpriest Father Ignazio Carrubba.
The Living Nativity is organized by the Immaculate Conception Parish of Resuttano, in collaboration with the San Tarcisio Oratory, the Municipality of Resuttano, the Italian Red Cross, and the Pro Loco. The event involves the entire community and represents one of the defining identity markers of this small town in the Sicilian hinterland.
The 2025/2026 edition of the Resuttano Living Nativity opened on December 26, 2025, at 4:30 PM and concluded on January 6, 2026, at 8:30 PM. Along the alleys of the historic district, actors in period costumes brought to life the workshops of ancient trades (bakers, shepherds, basket weavers, cobblers, washerwomen, greengrocers) surrounding the Nativity scene.
Visitors were able to enjoy free tastings of local products: pani di casa, ciciri caliati, favi squadati, pasta di casa, and fresh ricotta. On Epiphany, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men, the traditional ricotta festival was held.
