A day in the Casentino village among shepherds, flocks, and the ancient wisdom of Pratomagno
Perched on the slopes of the Pratomagno mountains in the heart of the Casentino, the village of Raggiolo is one of the hamlets of the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo, in the province of Arezzo. Every year, this small Tuscan medieval gem rediscovers its roots with the Transhumance Festival, an event that brings to life the centuries-old practice of seasonal migration of flocks between the mountains and the plains.
Transhumance is one of the most ancient forms of knowledge in Apennine communities and is now recognized as intangible cultural heritage. In Raggiolo, the festival is not just a re-enactment: it is a way to tell the story of the deep bond between the village, the shepherds, and the pastures of Pratomagno. Fabrics, cheeses, and the rhythms of the past return to the spotlight for a day in an authentic, family-friendly atmosphere.
The heart of the festival is Piazza San Michele, which comes alive throughout the afternoon. At the market stalls, you will find typical local products and clothing made from Casentino wool, while workshops provide live demonstrations of cheesemaking, including scottino and ricotta. There are also guided tours of the Ecomuseum of the Chestnut and Transhumance, traditional games for children, and family shows.
The festival begins in the morning with a guided hike along the historic shepherds' paths on the trails of Pratomagno. A walk that allows you to discover the landscapes of the Casentino mountains before returning to Raggiolo for the festivities in the square.
The event is organized by La Brigata di Raggiolo with the patronage of the Tuscany Region, in collaboration with the Municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo and the Casentino Ecomuseum. It is a free event open to everyone, designed for those who want to experience a different kind of day, far from mass tourism, amidst the most genuine traditions of the Arezzo Apennines.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the village of Raggiolo, in the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo (AR), hosted a new edition of the Transhumance Festival. The festivities in Piazza San Michele began at 2:00 PM and continued until late at night, preceded in the morning by a guided hike on the Pratomagno trails.
The event was organized by La Brigata di Raggiolo with the support of the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo, and the Casentino Ecomuseum.
