About Transhumance Festival

In the medieval village of Raggiolo, part of the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo in the province of Arezzo, the Transhumance Festival celebrates the thousand-year-old pastoral tradition of the Casentino region. Spend a full day in Piazza San Michele enjoying local markets, free tastings, cheesemaking workshops, Ecomuseum visits, children's entertainment, the traditional Shepherd's Dinner with acquacotta, and live music. In the morning, a guided hike along the Pratomagno trails retraces the historic paths of the shepherds.

The Raggiolo Transhumance Festival

Perched on the slopes of the Pratomagno mountains in the heart of the Casentino, the village of Raggiolo is one of the hamlets of the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo, in the province of Arezzo. Every year, this small Tuscan medieval gem rediscovers its roots with the Transhumance Festival, an event that brings to life the centuries-old practice of seasonal migration of flocks between the mountains and the plains.

A thousand-year-old Casentino tradition

Transhumance is one of the most ancient forms of knowledge in Apennine communities and is now recognized as intangible cultural heritage. In Raggiolo, the festival is not just a re-enactment: it is a way to tell the story of the deep bond between the village, the shepherds, and the pastures of Pratomagno. Fabrics, cheeses, and the rhythms of the past return to the spotlight for a day in an authentic, family-friendly atmosphere.

What to experience in the square

The heart of the festival is Piazza San Michele, which comes alive throughout the afternoon. At the market stalls, you will find typical local products and clothing made from Casentino wool, while workshops provide live demonstrations of cheesemaking, including scottino and ricotta. There are also guided tours of the Ecomuseum of the Chestnut and Transhumance, traditional games for children, and family shows.

  • Market featuring typical products and local crafts
  • Free tastings of local delicacies
  • Cheesemaking workshops with demonstrations of cheese, scottino, and ricotta
  • Visits to the Ecomuseum of the Chestnut and Transhumance
  • Traditional games and activities for children
  • Shepherd's Dinner featuring traditional acquacotta
  • Live music to close the day

Hiking on Pratomagno

The festival begins in the morning with a guided hike along the historic shepherds' paths on the trails of Pratomagno. A walk that allows you to discover the landscapes of the Casentino mountains before returning to Raggiolo for the festivities in the square.

A community event

The event is organized by La Brigata di Raggiolo with the patronage of the Tuscany Region, in collaboration with the Municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo and the Casentino Ecomuseum. It is a free event open to everyone, designed for those who want to experience a different kind of day, far from mass tourism, amidst the most genuine traditions of the Arezzo Apennines.
