About Raggio di Luna

Every summer, the small town of Calvi in the Sannio region near Benevento transforms into an open-air stage for "Raggio di Luna - Summer Evenings in Calvi." For over fifteen years, this festival has brightened August and September with concerts, theatre, cabaret, dance, street art, vintage vehicle rallies, and sporting events. All events are free and held outdoors across Piazza Roma, the Municipal Theatre, and the local districts, involving almost all the area's socio-cultural and sports associations.

A festival that illuminates the Sannio summer

Raggio di Luna - Summer Evenings in Calvi is the summer festival of the Municipality of Calvi, a village of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, in the heart of the Sannio region, Campania. Established in 2010, the event reached its sixteenth edition in 2025 and has become one of the most recognizable fixtures of the Benevento summer: not just a single event, but a two-month-long program that fills squares, streets, the Municipal Theatre, and the surrounding districts, from the heart of the village to the most peripheral areas.

The name of the festival comes from its historic logo: a female figure holding a moon, a symbol of the light, ideas, and hopes that the municipal administration and local associations wish to "gift" to the community. This reflects the core philosophy of a festival designed as an opportunity for gathering, participation, and civic coexistence in a territory where distances between hamlets are real and community life is the true glue.

Two months of events, all free

The calendar usually opens in the first half of August, around the night of San Lorenzo, and closes at the end of September, as the Sannio summer draws to a close. In between, there are about twenty events, almost all held in the evening and outdoors, and always free of charge: for the most popular shows, only a reservation is required.

  • Music — concerts by national artists and orchestral ensembles, ranging from Neapolitan singer-songwriter music to Italian pop, often featuring large orchestras.
  • Comedy and Cabaret — comedy shows and grand galas hosted by well-known faces from television and the Campania theatre scene.
  • Theatre and Dance — performances by the local theatre school, guest companies, and itinerant shows along the ancient Appian Way.
  • Street Art and Circus — the International Street Artists Festival, now in its fifteenth year, featuring a circus school and a craft fair.
  • Motors — the "Città di Calvi" vintage car and motorcycle rally, organized with the Antico Sannio Historic Automotoclub.
  • Sports — national bocce tournaments, open Paralympic competitions, and the Sports Festival that closes the season.
  • Popular Tradition — the Night of the Quadrille, a traditional Sannio dance performed professionally, and evenings dedicated to local products.

Culture, solidarity, and civic engagement

Alongside the entertainment, "Raggio di Luna" reserves space every year for social issues. Recent editions have hosted evenings against gender-based violence in collaboration with the Foundation for Human Fundamental Rights, health education meetings, art exhibitions, and public awards—the "Seal of Friendship"—presented to guest artists. It is this blend of popular entertainment and civic commitment that distinguishes the festival from many other summer events in the surrounding area.

Calvi, a village along the Appian Way

Calvi is located about ten kilometers southeast of Benevento, on a hillside between 163 and 381 meters above sea level, in a territory crossed by the ancient Appian Way and dotted with hamlets and rural clusters like Cubante and Li Mai. The landscape is classic inland Sannio: olive groves, vineyards, scattered farmhouses, and a historic center clustered around the main square. This fragmented geography explains the "diffused" format of the festival, which over the years has brought shows to the hamlets, and the decisive role of local associations, from the Pro Loco to sports clubs.

Why it is worth visiting

Those passing through Benevento between August and September will find in Calvi an unusually rich program for a town of this size, with names that often surprise for a village of two thousand inhabitants, and above all, a large audience: the final evenings of the 2025 edition drew over three thousand spectators to Piazza Roma. All this without a ticket, with the informal atmosphere of Southern Italian village festivals and the chance to taste typical Sannio products at the fairs accompanying the main events.

Raggio di Luna — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of "Raggio di Luna - Summer Evenings in Calvi" has not yet been officially announced. The festival traditionally takes place between the first half of August and the end of September, with about twenty free evening events including music, theatre, comedy, street art, motors, and sports. The calendar is usually presented at a press conference between late July and early August: it is therefore advisable to check for updates on the Municipality of Calvi's channels and the local Sannio press.

2026 Edition: dates and program not yet announced

As of late July 2026, no official calendar has been published for the new edition of Raggio di Luna - Summer Evenings in Calvi. However, the festival is a historic event for the Municipality of Calvi, in the province of Benevento, organized without interruption since 2010 in collaboration with the town's socio-cultural and sports associations.

It should be noted that administrative elections were held in Calvi in May 2026, resulting in the renewal of the municipal council: the definition of the summer program is therefore up to the new administration, which may explain the delay in the presentation of the program compared to previous years.

What to expect

If the format is confirmed, the calendar should span two months, from August to late September, with free-entry evenings in Piazza Roma, at the Municipal Theatre, and in the districts: concerts, comedy shows, theatre, the International Street Artists Festival, the "Città di Calvi" vintage car and motorcycle rally, bocce tournaments, and the Sports Festival as the closing event.

For final dates and the program, it is recommended to consult the website of the Municipality of Calvi and local Sannio newspapers.
