A re-enactment of the 1799 massacre at the Convento di Santa Maria della Pietà
Quella Notte al Convento is the historical re-enactment that brings the village of Ripa Teatina, in the province of Chieti, to life every summer in the heart of the Abruzzo region. The event, organized by the cultural association of the same name with the support of the local municipality, reconstructs one of the most intense episodes of local history: the massacre that took place in 1799 within the walls of the Convento di Santa Maria della Pietà.
At the end of the 18th century, during the French occupation of the Kingdom of Naples, Abruzzo became a theater of violent pro-Bourbon resistance. In Ripa Teatina, the masses led by Giuseppe Pronio opposed the French troops, turning the convent into a focal point. The retaliation was ruthless: six Franciscan friars living in the convent were martyred. The re-enactment portrays this painful chapter with philological rigor and deep emotional engagement.
The re-enactment takes place over two days. The opening evening is dedicated to conviviality: food stalls offer typical Abruzzo flavors while live music accompanies the public in a festive atmosphere within the convent's setting. The second day is the heart of the event, with a historical parade in period costumes winding through the village streets, Renaissance dances, and, in the evening, the theatrical staging of the massacre in the convent square, illuminated by torches and light effects.
An integral part of the experience is the food and wine stalls, where you can taste local specialties: arrosticini, porchetta sandwiches, the famous pallotte cacio e uova, French fries, and crêpes. An authentic way to experience the hospitality of this Abruzzo village.
The Convento di Santa Maria della Pietà, a Franciscan complex of great historical and architectural value, serves as the natural backdrop for the event. Through this re-enactment, the community of Ripa Teatina preserves and passes on its identity, combining historical memory, theater, folk traditions, and the promotion of Abruzzo's heritage.
The re-enactment opened on Saturday, June 27 with food stalls active from 8:00 PM, offering arrosticini, porchetta sandwiches, pallotte cacio e uova, and other Abruzzo specialties; at 9:30 PM, the live concert by the band La Maca enlivened the evening. On Sunday, June 28, at 6:30 PM, the historical parade in period costumes crossed the village streets with Renaissance dances, culminating at 9:30 PM in the theatrical staging of the massacre in the convent square, amidst torches and light effects.
