About Quartieri Spagnoli Carnival

Every Shrove Tuesday, the narrow alleys of the Quartieri Spagnoli come alive with masks, drums, and handmade floats. The Quartieri Spagnoli Social Carnival kicks off in Piazza Montecalvario, in the Montecalvario district, winding its way through the ancient heart of Naples. It is a self-managed, free festival born from grassroots efforts and prepared over weeks in local workshops, forming part of the city-wide network of Neapolitan social carnivals.

A Carnival born in the alleys

The Quartieri Spagnoli Social Carnival is one of the most authentic celebrations you can experience in Naples during the Carnival season. There are no stages, no barriers, and no tickets: just an entire neighborhood, Montecalvario, taking to the streets in costume to accompany a parade of handmade floats through the alleys that climb from Via Toledo toward Corso Vittorio Emanuele. It is an annual tradition that reaches its peak on Shrove Tuesday.

It is defined as a social carnival because it is built from the ground up, autonomously and independently, by networks of associations, committees, youth services, and social spaces that work year-round in the area without seeking public funding. Participation is open and completely free: anyone with a mask, an instrument, or simply the desire to walk among others is welcome to join the parade.

The Shrove Tuesday parade from Piazza Montecalvario

The meeting point is always the same: Piazza Montecalvario, in the heart of the Quartieri Spagnoli, on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday. From there, the parade begins, winding through the narrow alleys and staircases of the district, amidst balconies and hanging laundry, with children in the front row, drums, improvised percussion, and allegorical floats made from recycled materials.

The scale is that of a neighborhood procession rather than a large tourist parade: here, there are no record-breaking papier-mรขchรฉ giants, but rather collectively built figures that tell the story of what the neighborhood experiences and what it stands for. The festival is both a celebration and a platform for expression, following an ancient carnival tradition that flips hierarchies for a day and returns the public squares to those who live there.

A city-wide network: twelve parades from the center to the suburbs

The Quartieri Spagnoli parade is not an isolated event: it is part of the Naples Social Carnival, a network that schedules a dozen parades across the city and the metropolitan area every year. Over the years, neighborhoods and areas such as Bagnoli, Materdei, Montesanto, Rione Sanitร , the Historic Center, Capodimonte, Pizzofalcone, Soccavo, Scampia, and Pianura have participated, alongside the municipalities of Afragola and Giugliano in Campania.

The reference point for the network is the experience born in Scampia around Gridas, which has been bringing its own carnival parade to the streets for over forty years. The idea that unites all these events is simple: to break down the distance between the center and the suburbs and to showcase, for a few hours, a city that belongs to everyone, especially children.

Masks, floats, and workshops: preparing the festival

What you see in the square is the result of weeks of collective work. In the months leading up to Carnival, workshops open in social spaces and association offices throughout the Quartieri Spagnoli: floats are built, masks are painted, cardboard, fabric, and plastic are recycled, and choirs and choreographies are prepared. Families, local schools, youth groups, educational organizations, and volunteers all participate in the workshops.

  • Allegorical floats built with recycled materials
  • Masks and costumes created in neighborhood workshops
  • Percussion, murgas, and live music along the route
  • Entertainment for children, confetti, and streamers
  • Free and open participation, no registration required

The Quartieri Spagnoli, the stage for the party

The Quartieri Spagnoli are one of the densest and most recognizable places in Naples: a grid of alleys laid out in the 16th century on the hill rising behind Via Toledo, now one of the most visited destinations in the historic center. The administrative district is Montecalvario, which also hosts deeply rooted cultural and educational initiatives like the FOQUS โ€“ Fondazione Quartieri Spagnoli, located in the former Montecalvario Institute.

Passing through the Quartieri Spagnoli during the Carnival parade means seeing them in their most communal dimension: open shops, tables on the street, people leaning out from balconies, and masked children running between the legs of adults. It is an experience that tells the story of Campania more effectively than many guided tours.

Why it is worth attending

Those in Naples during Carnival will find here a free and genuine alternative to more commercial parades. It is best to arrive at Piazza Montecalvario a little early and let yourself be carried away by the procession: that is how you truly experience the Neapolitan Shrove Tuesday.

The Quartieri Spagnoli parade

On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Shrove Tuesday, the Quartieri Spagnoli Social Carnival met at 3:00 PM in Piazza Montecalvario for the traditional parade through the neighborhood's alleys. As every year, participation was free and open, with floats and masks created in local workshops.

Twelve parades throughout Naples

The Quartieri Spagnoli parade was one of the twelve events of the 2026 Social Carnival, distributed between the historic center, the hillside districts, and the suburbs of the Metropolitan City of Naples. On the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday, the Historic Center, Pizzofalcone, and Montesanto also paraded simultaneously, while Soccavo had taken place in the morning.

A grassroots festival

The 2026 edition confirmed the self-managed nature of the event, built without public funding by networks of associations, committees, and social spaces. As per tradition, the parades also brought themes of social and environmental protest to the streets, giving the Neapolitan Carnival its usual dual face of celebration and collective expression.
