About Puntasacra Film Fest

The Puntasacra Film Fest is a free open-air film festival that transforms the Piazzale dei Piroscafi at the Idroscalo in Ostia (Rome's 10th Municipality) into a grand seaside arena every July. Conceived by Alice nella Città and directed by Fabia Bettini and Gianluca Giannelli, the festival features premieres, timeless classics, and encounters with Italian film directors and actors, all set against the backdrop of the Roman coastline's sea breeze. Eleven evenings of film, dialogue, and culture with free admission, subject to availability.

Cinema returns to the Ostia seaside

The Puntasacra Film Fest is one of the most original events in Rome's cultural summer: a free-admission film festival that every July turns the Piazzale dei Piroscafi, the heart of the Idroscalo di Ostia in the 10th Municipality, into a large open-air arena overlooking the coast. For eleven nights, this frontier location becomes a cultural hub where the big screen lights up with the sea breeze as a backdrop.

A project by Alice nella Città

The event is conceived by Alice nella Città, the independent and parallel section of the Rome Film Fest, and stems from a dialogue between directors Fabia Bettini and Gianluca Giannelli and director Francesca Mazzoleni. Promoted by Roma Capitale and the 10th Municipality, the festival focuses on the encounter between cinema guests, the Idroscalo community, and the public, with the goal of restoring cultural centrality to a neighborhood often on the margins of the capital's narrative.

Screenings, guests, and encounters

The program alternates between premieres, auteur films, major hits, and tributes to masters of Italian cinema, always accompanied by meetings with directors and actors who engage with the audience after the screenings. Alongside cinema, there is space for literature, with dedicated collaborations, and young local storytellers invited to introduce the events and recount Ostia from a new perspective.

A local festival

The Puntasacra Film Fest is not just a series of screenings: it is a project that weaves together art, community, and landscape. Born in 2022, in just a few editions it has become one of Rome's main summer stages, capable of attracting thousands of spectators to the banks of the Tiber where it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The setting of the Idroscalo, with its boats and open horizons, gives the film viewing experience a unique atmosphere, suspended between the metropolis and the Lazio coast.

Why it's worth attending

  • High-quality cinema that is completely free, outdoors, and by the sea
  • Exclusive encounters with stars of Italian cinema
  • An opportunity to discover the Idroscalo di Ostia and the Roman coast
  • A program that combines film, literature, and the local community

Practical information — Puntasacra Film Fest

How to get there

The Idroscalo di Ostia is located in Rome's 10th Municipality, at the mouth of the Tiber. By train, take the Roma-Lido line (Rome-Ostia) to the Lido Centro or Colombo stop, then continue towards the seafront; by car, follow Via del Mare or Via Cristoforo Colombo until you reach Ostia.

Admission and times

Admission to all screenings is free, subject to availability. The evenings take place at prime time, outdoors: arriving early to secure a seat is recommended.

Tips

As it is a seaside arena, it can get chilly in the evening: bringing a sweatshirt is useful. There are plenty of beach clubs and bars along the Ostia seafront for dinner or an aperitif before the show.
