The Prugnolo mushroom festival in the heart of the Colline Metallifere
The Prugnolo Festival is the most anticipated spring event in Montieri, a small town in the Province of Grosseto nestled within the woods of the Colline Metallifere in Tuscany. The event is entirely dedicated to the prugnolo (Calocybe gambosa), a prized spring mushroom that grows in the local meadows and chestnut groves, and which has been a staple of Maremma peasant cuisine for generations.
For an entire weekend in May, the village's historic center transforms into a gourmet hub. Saturday evening is dedicated to a dinner featuring a prugnolo-based menu, while Sunday focuses on a lunch showcasing traditional dishes. On Saturday afternoon and late Sunday morning, the Prugnolato Aperitif in the Square returns, featuring tastings and local wines.
An ancient medieval village, Montieri owes its name and history to mining: for centuries, these hills provided silver and copper, leaving behind a landscape of tunnels, woods, and trails that are now part of the Technological and Archaeological National Park of the Colline Metallifere Grossetane. The Prugnolo Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Tuscan Maremma, off the beaten path, where nature and culinary tradition merge.
Organized by the Municipality of Montieri together with the La Meria Cultural Association, the Prugnolo Festival is a family-friendly event that brings together food lovers, nature enthusiasts, and mushroom hunters. Between courses, visitors can stroll through the village alleys, browse the local producers' market (seeds, flour, pasta, bread, sweets, wine, oil, honey, and cheese), and join guided hikes in the surrounding woods.
The 2026 Prugnolo Festival brought the village of Montieri, in the Province of Grosseto, to life over the weekend of May 9th and 10th. The program followed the event's well-established formula: a dinner based on prugnolo mushrooms on Saturday evening, a traditional lunch on Sunday, and the unmissable Prugnolato Aperitif in the Square on Saturday afternoon and late Sunday morning.
To round off the days, Sunday featured a market of local products and crafts and a mycological exhibition dedicated to spring mushrooms, alongside entertainment and shows organized by the Municipality of Montieri and the La Meria Cultural Association.
Montieri can be reached by car via the SS73 Senese-Aretina or the provincial road connecting Massa Marittima and Roccastrada. The nearest train station is in Grosseto, from where you can continue by car or bus toward the Colline Metallifere.
The festival typically takes place over a weekend in May, with dinner on Saturday evening and lunch on Sunday.
Reservations for dinner and lunch are recommended. For updated information on dates, menus, and times, please refer to the Municipality of Montieri and the La Meria Association.
