About Procession of the Mysteries

Every Good Friday, Mugnano del Cardinale relives one of the most intense traditions in the province of Avellino: the Procession of the Mysteries. A procession of participants in custom-made costumes, inspired by Gospel iconography, moves in religious silence through the historic center alongside the crucifix and the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows. Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint John the Baptist, the Apostles, and Christ in various depictions of the Passion mark a rite documented since the first half of the 19th century and brought back to life in 2016 by the local Pro Loco.

Good Friday in Mugnano del Cardinale

In the town of Mugnano del Cardinale, in the province of Avellino, Holy Week culminates with the Procession of the Mysteries, the most attended rite of the local liturgical year. This is not a simple procession: it is a figurative procession, where, alongside the crucifix and sacred statues, dozens of participants in custom-made costumes—inspired by Gospel iconography—symbolically and orderly re-enact the main mysteries of Christ's life. The procession moves through the town in religious silence, and it is precisely this silence that strikes those witnessing it for the first time.

A tradition documented since the early 19th century

Local sources place the "Procession" that paraded through the town streets under the name of "The Mysteries" as early as the first half of the 1800s, involving the entire population. Over time, the event solidified as a true sacred representation, becoming the cornerstone of Holy Week celebrations in Mugnano. After a long interruption, which left the last historical edition in the 1980s, the tradition was revived in 2016 by the Pro Loco "Rimettiamoci Insieme", which has managed its organization every year since, in collaboration with the parish community.

Who parades: the characters of the Mysteries

The procession consists of sacred statues and participants embodying the joyful, glorious, and sorrowful mysteries. Among the figures recognized along the route:

  • Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint John the Baptist, who symbolically open the processional sequence;
  • the Apostles, in costumes created specifically for the event;
  • Christ in various depictions of the Passion, from Christ in chains to Christ carrying the cross;
  • the crucifix and the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows;
  • other symbolic characters linked to the Gospel narrative.

The scenes recall the most dramatic passages of the Passion: the betrayal of Judas, Peter's denial, the flagellation, the ascent to Golgotha, and the final sacrifice on the cross. It is a story told through images, constructed so that the viewer can follow it without the need for words.

The route through the historic center

The procession departs on the afternoon of Good Friday from the Ascension Parish and travels through the entire town: it crosses the historic center, touches the Carmel Parish, and goes up Via Garibaldi to the main square, where the procession stops to listen to the reflections and messages of the priests. The reference point for the public is Piazza Umberto I, the town's civic heart, where most spectators gather.

A community rite, not a show

In Mugnano, the Procession of the Mysteries is experienced as a moment of unity and prayer rather than a tourist event. All generations participate: children, young people, and the elderly dress as Gospel characters, while hundreds of people follow the procession along the streets. The rite takes place with respect for the memory of the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is both a personal meditation and a collective recognition of local identity. For the visitor arriving from outside, it is an opportunity to observe up close a form of Campanian popular religiosity that remains intact, without mediation or stagecraft.

Mugnano del Cardinale, the town of Saint Philomena

The village, on the border between Irpinia and the Nola area, is known throughout Campania and well beyond regional borders for the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena, where the relics of the virgin and martyr—found in Rome in 1802 and brought to the town by Don Francesco De Lucia—have been kept since August 10, 1805. The sanctuary, dating back to the 17th century, has welcomed popes and pilgrims from all over the world for centuries. This density of devotion explains why Holy Week in Mugnano del Cardinale holds such significant weight in the town's calendar.

When it takes place

The date is movable and always coincides with Good Friday: April 3 for the 2026 edition, and April 18 for the 2025 edition. Departure is scheduled for the afternoon, usually around 5:00 PM. Participation is open and free, and no reservation is required: simply be along the route at the departure time.
