The Good Friday rite in the historic center of Martina Franca
In the historic center of Martina Franca, a baroque jewel of the Itria Valley in the province of Taranto, the Procession of the Mysteries is the most anticipated and deeply felt rite of Holy Week. Every Good Friday, the city gathers in silence to accompany the statues of the Passion of Christ along the cobblestone streets, amidst baroque churches and noble palaces, in an atmosphere suspended in penance, music, and devotion.
The procession is guarded by the Confraternity of Sant'Antonio di Padova, which has its oratory in the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, now the sanctuary of the Christ Spirante. The confraternity, founded in 1706 by the conventual friar Francesco Antonio Spennati, has handed down the Good Friday procession of the Mysteries since 1716: over three centuries of uninterrupted history that make this rite one of the oldest and most deeply rooted in Puglia.
The heart of the procession consists of the statues of the Mysteries, which depict the events of Christ's life from the separation from his Mother to the deposition in the tomb. Created in local workshops by artisan-artists who competed in style and expressiveness, they feature limbs and faces sculpted directly from wood and garments stiffened with glue-impregnated canvas. The procession opens with the large Penitential Cross, known in dialect as 'a crosce dรฌi Mistรฉre, decorated with the symbols of the Passion and carried by penitents.
Accompanying the slow pace of the procession is the somber sound of the troccole, known in dialect as i turnร ccule: ancient wooden and iron instruments that, when shaken, produce a noise like clashing bones, meant to evoke the world's dismay at the death of the Son of God. Together with the mournful chants and the funeral marches played by the bands, they create a unique soundscape that envelops the entire historic center.
The Procession of the Mysteries is not a folkloric spectacle but a moment of profound shared spirituality, involving the entire community of Martina Franca along with the many visitors who reach the Itria Valley for Holy Week. Admission is free, and the route winds through the squares and alleys of the center, offering evocative glimpses of the city's baroque architecture.
