The patronal feast of an Irpinian village, blending popular devotion with the woods of the Partenio

At an altitude of 560 meters, just a dozen kilometers from Avellino, Sant'Angelo a Scala is one of the smallest and greenest villages in Irpinia: with just over seven hundred inhabitants, surrounded by chestnut and beech forests, and framed by the Partenio Regional Park. Here, the Procession of Saint Michael the Archangel is not a staged tourist event, but the moment the village truly finds itself: the saint who gives the town its name is carried on shoulders through the historic center, past stone houses, votive shrines, and alleys that climb toward the upper part of the village.
The most characteristic feature of the feast is the meeting of the statues: those of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Madonna del Carmelo parade together along the processional route, a custom passed down through generations in the Sant'Angelo community. It is a simple and deeply felt gesture that, in Irpinian popular devotion, marks the bond between the protection of the Archangel and that of the Virgin Mary. First-time observers are often struck by the hushed silence of the procession, broken only by prayers, hymns, and the slow, rhythmic steps of the pallbearers.
The feast occupies an entire day in August. Celebrations begin early in the morning and continue until late in the evening: in the edition documented by the Municipality, the program ran from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM, with the municipal headquarters at Corso Europa 25 and the town center serving as the focal points. It is the typical rhythm of Southern patronal feasts: the liturgical and processional aspects during the central hours, followed by the evening gathering in the square, when the village fills with families, emigrants returning for the holidays, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The feast is also an excellent opportunity to discover a historical heritage that is surprising for such a small center. Sant'Angelo a Scala is known as the village of the two Popes: the Church of San Silvestro is linked to the memory of Gian Pietro Carafa, the future Pope Paul IV, while the village preserves its Castle, the Abbey of San Giacomo with its bell tower, the Convent of Santa Maria Incoronata, Palazzo Carafa, and the ancient fountain-washhouse. The local devotional calendar does not end with the summer: the feast of September 29th is also dedicated to the patron saint, while Saint Silvestro Pope is celebrated on August 18th.
The feast revolves around everything that makes this corner of Campania unique. The economy of the municipality, in the Province of Avellino, remains predominantly agricultural: olives, chestnuts, hazelnuts, and above all, traditional Irpinian wines like Fiano and Aglianico. Throughout the year, the village hosts popular gastronomic events, such as the Cicatielli, Fusilli and Wine Festival, and in mid-August, the Village of the Two Popes festival, dedicated to art, crafts, and hiking trails.
Those looking for a massive, spectacular party will find more scenic events elsewhere. However, those who want to understand how summer is truly experienced in the villages of Irpinia — the shared devotion, the open doors, the long lunches, and the evenings in the square under the mountain breeze — will find in Sant'Angelo a Scala one of the most authentic experiences in the Province of Avellino. And just a few minutes' drive away are Avellino, the sanctuaries of the Partenio, and the Irpinian wine routes, for those who wish to turn a day of celebration into a weekend getaway.

Sant'Angelo a Scala is located about 12 km from Avellino, on the Irpinian side of the Partenio Park, at an altitude of 560 meters. It is easily reached by car from the provincial capital; the most convenient train station and transport hubs remain those in the Avellino and Naples areas. During the feast days, traffic in the historic center is restricted: it is best to leave your car at the edge of the village and continue on foot, keeping in mind that the village streets are uphill.
Participation in the procession and celebrations is free and open to everyone.
