The Prezza Artichoke Festival

The Artichoke Festival is the most iconic gastronomic event in the small town of Prezza, a village perched among the Apennine mountains in the heart of the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo). Every year in late May, the historic center transforms into a journey of flavors, music, and popular tradition that draws visitors from across the region and neighboring provinces.

The Prezza artichoke, the absolute star

At the heart of the festival is the Prezza artichoke, a prized variety grown in the soils of the Peligna Valley and considered a local specialty. The festival was created specifically to showcase this agricultural excellence, often paired with local extra virgin olive oil. In the kitchens set up by the local women, the artichoke becomes the star of traditional dishes: above all, the artichoke cream lasagna, the true pride of Prezza's gastronomy, but also artichokes "alla prezzana," fried artichokes, and numerous other specialties of Abruzzo's peasant cuisine.

Music, folklore, and entertainment

The Artichoke Festival is not just about food: the two-day event is animated by a rich calendar of activities ranging from folklore to pop music. Street bands in the alleys, local folk choirs, evening concerts, and the traditional final fireworks display accompany visitors from the afternoon until late at night, creating that atmosphere of joy and conviviality that is the hallmark of Abruzzo's village festivals.

A village to discover

Visiting Prezza during the festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic Apennine village, with its stone alleys, perched houses, and views over the Peligna Valley. The artisan market set up along the streets of the center completes the experience, featuring local products, handicrafts, and the food and wine excellence of the L'Aquila hinterland.

Organization

The event is organized by the Pro Loco "Nicola Di Pietro" in collaboration with the Municipality of Prezza, with the involvement of local associations and volunteers who renew their commitment every year to keep this tradition alive.
