The festival that kicks off Castel Bolognese's summer with live concerts, beer, and Romagna cuisine
Portofranko – Art, Music and Beer is one of the most beloved and long-standing events in Castel Bolognese, a municipality in the province of Ravenna, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. For over twenty-five years, this festival has marked the official opening of the Castel Bolognese summer season: for five consecutive evenings, usually at the end of June, the Prato della Filippina (along Viale Roma) transforms into a large meeting space filled with live concerts, food stands, and rivers of beer.
Portofranko is organized by the Associazione Culturale Portofranko, an organization whose core values are cohesion and a sense of community belonging. A distinctive feature is the age of the volunteers: the vast majority are under thirty, a sign of how the festival has become a reference point for young people in the town and surrounding areas. The proceeds from the event are allocated to local charity initiatives, in collaboration with local associations and businesses.
The heart of Portofranko is the stage. Each evening, bands and artists of different genres take turns, from rock to pop, from singer-songwriters to more contemporary sounds, with space for both emerging artists from the Romagna region and more established groups. The evenings often continue late into the night with DJ sets. Over the years, the stage has hosted dozens of acts, confirming Portofranko's commitment to discovering and promoting the local music scene.
Alongside the music, Portofranko is famous for its food and drink offerings. The food stand generally opens at 7:00 PM and offers traditional Romagna dishes and festival specialties: wood-fired pizza, spit-roasted chicken, baked pork knuckle, hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta, skewers, and paella. The star is the draft beer, a true signature of the event, with a selection that changes year by year among lagers, weiss, IPAs, and stouts.
More than just a festival, Portofranko is an identity-defining event for Castel Bolognese and is part of the city's summer program "Sere d'Estate" (Summer Evenings), which each year offers over eighty events including music, theater, cinema, literature, and sports from May to September. Experiencing Portofranko means breathing in the authentic atmosphere of an Emilia-Romagna village festival: outdoor tables, music until late, youth volunteering, and that sense of community that makes summer in Romagna unique.
The 2026 edition of Portofranko in Castel Bolognese (RA) is confirmed: the event is among the established appointments of the "Sere d'Estate 2026" summer program, presented by the Municipality with over eighty events from May to September.
True to its tradition, Portofranko will liven up the Prato della Filippina at the end of June with live concerts, the food stand with Romagna specialties, and the famous draft beer. Entry to the concerts will be free.
The detailed music program and the definitive dates for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Associazione Culturale Portofranko on their official channels in the weeks before the event.
