Two August weekends dedicated to the porcino mushroom of the Bolognese Apennines
The Porcino Mushroom Festival is the highlight event of the summer in Castel del Rio, a small village in the Province of Bologna nestled in the Santerno Valley, along the historic Strada Montanara that has always connected the Emilia plain to Tuscany. Organized by the Pro Loco Alidosiana, the festival transforms the town into a grand stage of taste for two weekends in August, attracting thousands of people from Emilia-Romagna and neighboring regions.
The porcino mushrooms of the Bolognese Apennines are renowned for their intense flavor and superior quality, a result of the chestnut and beech woods surrounding the village. It is to them that the festival pays homage, offering them in all traditional variations: from appetizers to first courses, from main courses to side dishes. A true immersion into the flavors of the Apennine undergrowth, in one of the most evocative seasons to visit these hills.
The heart of the festival is the large tent set up by the Pro Loco, which seats hundreds. On the table, you'll find tagliatelle alla boscaiola, tortelli, fried porcini, polenta with mushrooms, and fragrant meat dishes, with menus also designed for those seeking gluten-free or mushroom-free alternatives. Along the streets of the center and in Piazza della Repubblica, stalls selling local products and crafts complete the experience, while live music and shows liven up the village every evening until late at night.
Born in the 1980s, the Porcino Mushroom Festival has become a symbol of the identity of Castel del Rio and the entire valley community over the years. Behind the event is the voluntary work of many local associations, from the Pro Loco to the sports group, who renew the appointment every summer. More than just a gastronomic festival, it is a popular celebration that tells the deep connection between this Apennine territory, its woods, and its cuisine.
A visit to the festival is also an opportunity to discover the village: the monumental Palazzo Alidosi, the Renaissance residence of the family that gave its name to the "Sagre Alidosiane," and the famous Ponte Alidosi, a striking 16th-century humpback bridge spanning the Santerno River. A historical heritage that makes Castel del Rio a fascinating destination in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines.
The Porcino Mushroom Festival in Castel del Rio returns in summer 2026 for two weekends in August: Saturday 22 and Sunday 23, then Saturday 30 and Sunday 31. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Alidosiana, reintroduces the proven formula that attracts thousands of visitors to the Santerno Valley each year.
For this edition too, the village comes alive with the gastronomic stand dedicated to porcino mushrooms from the Bolognese Apennines, stalls of typical products and crafts in Piazza della Repubblica, and evening entertainment. Dinner service starts at 7:00 PM, with lunch service on Sundays.
The 2026 dates are confirmed by the Pro Loco Alidosiana: August 22-23 and August 30-31. The detailed program of the evenings (musical groups, shows, and tributes) and the complete menu will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event on the website sagrealidosiane.it and on the Pro Loco's social media channels.
The usual structure of the event includes: opening of the gastronomic stand with dinner service from 7:00 PM (and lunch on Sundays from 12:00 PM), stalls of typical products along the historic center, and live music with evening shows every day of opening.
Castel del Rio is located along the SS 610 Montanara Imolese, in the Santerno Valley. By car: from Imola, follow the SS610 towards Florence (approx. 35 km); from Bologna, take the A14 motorway to Imola, then the SS610. Dedicated parking areas are set up for the festival.
The event takes place over two weekends in August. Dinner service from 7:00 PM on opening days; on Sundays, lunch service is also available from 12:00 PM. Takeaway is available.
To book a table, it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco Alidosiana (tel. +39 351 648 2510, email [email protected]). Updated program and menu on the website sagrealidosiane.it.
