The widespread literary festival that turns Pontedera into a city of books
Ponte di Parole is the widespread literary festival of Pontedera, a city in the Valdera area in the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. The concept is simple yet powerful: for a few days in spring, the entire city becomes a vast container of stories, where book pages step off the shelves to bring squares, theaters, villas, and museums to life. It is not just a single stage, but a network of interconnected venues that define the festival's "widespread" format.
The program features dozens of appointments held in numerous city spaces: the Teatro Era, the G. Gronchi Library, Villa Crastan, the Piaggio Museum, as well as bookstores, schools, and community halls. Offerings range from meetings with major names in Italian fiction to workshops for children, theatrical performances to themed screenings, and photography exhibitions to art installations. The festival is divided into several thematic sections designed for diverse audiences, from adult readers to teenagers and children.
Over the years, Ponte di Parole has brought prominent writers and intellectuals to Pontedera: from Dacia Maraini to Maria Grazia Calandrone, from Fabio Genovesi to Marcello Fois, alongside journalists, essayists, and contemporary storytellers. These meetings are more than simple book presentations; they are opportunities for discussion on current events, memory, civic engagement, and imagination.
The festival is organized by the Municipality of Pontedera and its G. Gronchi Library, with the patronage and support of the Tuscany Region and local entities such as the Fondazione per la Cultura Pontedera, the Fondazione Piaggio, and the Fondazione Idana Pescioli. It is made possible primarily by a network of over thirty cultural associations, independent bookstores, and schools that collaborate to build the program: a true participatory celebration for the Valdera community.
One of the hallmarks of Ponte di Parole is that all events are free of charge, making culture accessible to everyone. Many sessions only require online booking to guarantee a seat. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Pontedera in spring and experience literature as a moment of connection between generations.
The fifth edition of Ponte di Parole took place in Pontedera from April 7 to 12, 2026, confirming its status as one of the most popular literary events in Tuscany. Over 80 events involved 19 locations in the city, organized into six thematic sections: Timeless, Classic, Teen Spirit, School, Performance, and Junior.
The opening on April 7 featured Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi. In the following days, guests such as Mauro Corona, Francesca Fialdini, Veronica Raimo, Marco Rovelli, Christian Raimo, Marco Balzano, and Mattia Insolia participated in meetings, readings, and theatrical performances. All events were free of charge, many requiring reservations, totaling over 5,000 attendees.
Full program spread across 19 city locations, including Teatro Era, G. Gronchi Library, Villa Crastan, Piaggio Museum, and Civico35.
Pontedera is located along the Florence–Pisa railway line: the Pontedera-Casciana Terme station is well-connected and just a few minutes' walk from the city center. By car, it can be reached via the SGC FI-PI-LI highway (Pontedera exit). The nearest airports are Pisa (Galileo Galilei) and Florence (Amerigo Vespucci).
All events are free of charge. Many appointments require online booking (often via Eventbrite) due to limited seating.

Pontedera offers hotels and B&Bs in the center; there is no shortage of agritourisms in the surrounding Valdera area. Pisa, Lucca, and Florence are easily reachable by train for those wishing to combine their visit to the festival with a stay in Tuscany.
