The historic Riganella snail festival in the heart of the Grosseto Maremma
In the heart of the Grosseto Maremma, the small village of Poggio Murella (Municipality of Manciano, Province of Grosseto) hosts the Riganella Snail Festival every year, one of the most traditional and anticipated gastronomic events in southern Tuscany. Born several decades ago through the initiative of the local community, the festival is now a fixed appointment in early June, capable of transforming the village into a great place for popular celebration.
The heart of the event is the riganella snail, a local specialty prepared according to recipes passed down from generation to generation. Alongside the signature dish, the food stalls offer the most genuine dishes of Maremma cuisine: bruschetta, lunghini, the famous acquacotta, grilled meat, and local wines. A simple and sincere cuisine, made of local products and flavors that tell the peasant history of this land.
Throughout the festival, the stalls open every evening, while lunch is also available on Sunday. The evenings are animated by live music, orchestras, and dance evenings that continue until late at night, in a convivial and family atmosphere. The event attracts numerous visitors every year, not only from neighboring towns but also from the thermal and tourist centers of the area, such as Saturnia, just a few kilometers away.
Participating in the Riganella Snail Festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Tuscan Maremma, made of hills, villages, and deeply rooted gastronomic traditions. Manciano and its hamlets are located in one of the most evocative areas of the Province of Grosseto, a short distance from the famous Saturnia thermal baths and the tuff villages like Pitigliano and Sovana. The festival therefore represents not only a food and wine event, but also a stop for those who want to experience the most genuine and less touristy Tuscany.
In 2026, Poggio Murella once again renewed the appointment with the Riganella Snail Festival, scheduled from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7. The food stalls opened every evening from 7:30 PM, with lunch also available on Sunday from 12:30 PM.
The star of the menu was the local riganella snail, accompanied by typical Maremma cuisine dishes: bruschetta, lunghini, acquacotta, grilled meat, and local wines. The three days were enlivened by live music and dance evenings, in a festive popular atmosphere.
Friday, June 5: food stalls open from 7:30 PM, evening with live music from 9:00 PM.
Saturday, June 6: stalls open from 7:30 PM, dance evening.
Sunday, June 7: lunch from 12:30 PM and dinner from 7:30 PM, with musical entertainment.
