Floats, masks, and merriment in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every winter, the center of Poggiardo, a small town in the Province of Lecce in the heart of lower Salento, transforms into a large open-air stage for the Poggiardo Carnival. Between Piazza Episcopo and the streets of the historic center, a popular festival comes to life, filled with color, music, and joy, drawing families and visitors from all the surrounding towns.
The true star of the event is the parade of papier-mâché floats, handcrafted by local enthusiasts and associations. Surrounding the floats are costumed groups, street performers, entertainers, and costumed figures who parade through the main streets and squares of the town in a festive procession accompanied by music and confetti. There is no shortage of satire and ironic themes that have always characterized the Italian carnival tradition.
The Poggiardo Carnival is designed primarily for children and families: entertainment, shows, creative workshops, masks, and food stalls turn every afternoon of the festival into an explosion of fun. In recent editions, the event has combined the float parade with activities in Piazza Episcopo, featuring live shows, DJ sets, and entertainment provided by local organizations and the town's sports and cultural associations.
The event is rooted in the popular tradition of Salento and is consistently carried forward by the Associazione Creativa-Mente, in collaboration with the Municipality of Poggiardo and various local entities. Over the years, the program has alternated between historical processions featuring the King and Queen of the Carnival, multi-day float parades, and festive gatherings in the square, confirming the event as one of the most cherished carnival celebrations in the Lecce hinterland.
Located in southern Salento, Poggiardo is also known for the hamlet of Vaste, with its archaeological park and Messapian and Byzantine heritage. Experiencing the Carnival in Poggiardo is therefore also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Apulia, among popular traditions, culture, and Salento hospitality.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Poggiardo Carnival have not yet been officially announced. The event traditionally takes place during the carnival season, between late January and February. To stay updated on dates, parades, and events, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Poggiardo and the Associazione Creativa-Mente.
