Summer evenings in the square of Nova Levante, featuring Schuhplattler dancers, local brass bands, and Val d'Ega specialties
The Platzlfest — literally the "square festival" — is one of the most beloved summer events in Nova Levante (known as Welschnofen in German), a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige. The village is nestled in the Val d'Ega (Eggental), at the foot of the Catinaccio and Latemar massifs, in one of the most scenic corners of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.
On select summer evenings, the church square (Kirchplatz) and Romstraße are closed to traffic and come alive with stalls, music, and locals. It is an authentic celebration, designed primarily for the village community but welcoming to holidaymakers, who find here a genuine taste of South Tyrolean traditions away from the major tourist crowds.
The rhythm of the evening is set by brass bands from the Val d'Ega and guest groups performing on the outdoor stage. The highlight is the performance of the Schuhplattler, dancers in traditional costume who captivate audiences of all ages with their characteristic "Platteln" — rhythmic slapping of thighs, knees, and shoe soles. The event also features visiting Schuhplattler groups from neighboring towns, such as those from Steinegg (Collepietra).
A dedicated program is provided for children, including creative workshops using natural materials, flower planting, and face painting: the Platzlfest is truly a festival for the whole family.
Local gastronomy takes center stage: stalls offer typical South Tyrolean and Tyrolean specialties, from Schlutzer (rye ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta) to Krapfen, Strauben (spiral-shaped fritters), and the local Welschnofen beer. It is the perfect opportunity to sample mountain cuisine in a festive atmosphere.
The Platzlfest takes place in the center of Nova Levante, around the parish church. Admission is free and no reservation is required: just show up. During the evenings, Romstraße remains closed to traffic, so we recommend reaching the village by public transport. The event is organized by Eggental Tourismus (the Val d'Ega tourist board).
The 2026 edition of the Platzlfest in Nova Levante (Welschnofen), in the Val d'Ega, takes place over three summer evenings in the village center, with Romstraße closed to traffic. Each evening features Schuhplattler dancers in costume, a guest band, stalls serving Schlutzer, Krapfen, Strauben, and Welschnofen beer, as well as activities for children.
Every evening: food stalls with South Tyrolean specialties (Schlutzer, Krapfen, Strauben, Welschnofen beer) and a children's program with creative workshops using natural materials, flower planting, and face painting.
Church Square (Kirchplatz), center of Nova Levante/Welschnofen (BZ), along Romstraße / Via Roma. During the Platzlfest evenings, Romstraße is closed to traffic from 6:30 PM to midnight.
The evenings generally run from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM.
Free and open to all, no reservation required.
Nova Levante is located in the Val d'Ega, about 20 km from Bolzano. Given the traffic closure on Romstraße, we recommend using public transport: the village is served by several bus lines (180, 182, 184, 187). Parking is available at the cable car area.
