Four nights of wood-fired ovens, live music, and comedy in the Frolice district of Ariano Irpino
The Pizza Festival in Ariano Irpino is more than just a summer food fair: it is the story of a group of friends who, in 2004, decided to turn the memory of Francesco Albanese, who passed away prematurely, into a community event. The association founded on May 5, 2004, evolved in 2009 into the Pro Loco Frolice Francesco Albanese, now an APS (Social Promotion Association) with about sixty active members. Every August, they host four nights of gastronomy, music, and volunteering in the Frolice district, in the municipality of Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino, Campania.
The core of the festival is the wood-fired ovens, which run non-stop from the early afternoon until late at night. Pizzas are prepared with local, authentic ingredients following Neapolitan and Irpinian traditions, alongside a gastronomic offering that has expanded significantly over the years:
The format is that of a large neighborhood festival: you order, pick up your food, and sit together in an area that has recently accommodated over three thousand seats served by seven ovens.
Beyond the food, entertainment is the true star of these four nights. Over the years, the Frolice stage has hosted comedians and showmen from the Campanian scene, pop and Neapolitan music bands, nineties revival nights, and Southern folk music groups. The program changes annually and is announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event, typically via the official website and the festival's social media channels.
The Pizza Festival is a non-profit event: the organizing association works in social assistance, charity, and volunteering, dedicating the proceeds to charitable initiatives. In recent editions, projects such as Una Pizza Sociale (a social pizza workshop for children) and a raffle with prizes have become permanent fixtures, with proceeds supporting the association's activities.
Ariano Irpino is one of the largest municipalities in Irpinia, overlooking the Campanian Apennines between the Ufita Valley and the Cervaro Plain. The Pizza Festival is part of the Ariano City of Major Events network, created to coordinate the city's four main events alongside the Ariano International Film Festival, the Ariano Folk Festival, and the Historical Re-enactment of the Gift of the Holy Thorns. For those visiting Irpinia in August, this means being able to enjoy auteur cinema, folk music, historical memory, and local cuisine within a few weeks without leaving the same municipality.
More than just a food festival, the Pizza Festival is a piece of Irpinian social life: entire families, long communal tables, the scent of wood-fired ovens greeting you from the parking lot, and an entirely volunteer-run organization. Entry is free, parking is free, and the area is accessible to people with disabilities—two elements that make it one of the easiest and most popular evening outings of the summer in the province of Avellino.
In 2026, the Pizza Festival in Ariano Irpino reaches its twenty-first edition, confirming itself as one of the most popular gastronomic events of the summer in the province of Avellino. The event returns to the Frolice district, in the equipped area where the Pro Loco Frolice Francesco Albanese APS sets up the festival village every year with wood-fired ovens, refreshment points, and the performance stage.
The event is part of the Ariano City of Major Events network, presented in July 2026 alongside the Ariano International Film Festival, the Ariano Folk Festival, and the Historical Re-enactment of the Gift of the Holy Thorns: four associations that coordinate the city's summer calendar to promote it both in Italy and abroad.
As in previous editions, expect pizzas baked in wood-fired ovens with local ingredients, gluten-free and lactose-free options, tray-baked pizza and pinsa, Irpinian cuisine products, desserts, and craft beer, as well as live music and comedy over the four nights. Entry and parking remain free.
The dates indicated come from the 2026 program of the Pro Loco associations in the province of Avellino; some tourist calendars may report a slightly different placement in mid-August. Before traveling, it is advisable to check the official website arianofestadellapizza.it or the festival's Facebook page, where organizers publish the final poster with dates and program.
