A festival that kicks off summer in the Lepini Mountains

The Pisterzo Fig Festival is the annual event that, every year in early July, officially launches the Pisterzo Summer, a calendar of parties, concerts, and gastronomic evenings that brings this small village in the province of Latina to life throughout the season. Pisterzo is a hamlet of the Municipality of Prossedi, nestled between the Lepini Mountains and the Amaseno Valley, in one of the most agricultural and off-the-beaten-path areas of southern Lazio.

The Pisterzo fig, an iconic local product

The absolute star is the local fig, recognizable by its matte green color and a very sweet flavor with hints of honey. Here, the fig is not just any fruit: it grows wild along the dry-stone walls and terraces surrounding the village and has sustained the local peasant diet for generations, consumed fresh in summer and dried for the winter. Early July is when the first fruits reach the right ripeness: hence the choice of date, which has remained unchanged over time.

The distribution of blessed fruit

The most characteristic moment of the day is the blessing and distribution of the figs, a simple ritual that combines popular devotion and peasant culture, preceding the opening of the stalls. It is the gesture that signals the start of the festival and which the locals consider the heart of the event, far more than a simple tasting.

The food stalls set up in the historic center offer a menu built entirely around the fruit:

• The famous pizza with prosciutto and figs, the event's signature dish

• Pairings with typical local products, from Pontine buffalo mozzarella to local cured meats and cheeses

Music, dancing, and village atmosphere

After dinner, the party moves to the square, where live music accompanies dancing until late. It is a genuinely rustic atmosphere, without pretense: shared tables, families, and groups of friends arriving from neighboring towns. In recent years, the event has attracted visitors not only from the Pontine province but also from Ciociaria and Rome, confirming its status as one of the most popular festivals in the Lepini area.

What to see nearby

Those arriving in Pisterzo can take advantage of the day to visit the village of Prossedi, with its baronial palace, and explore the Amaseno Valley, a land of buffalo and pristine hilly landscapes. Within a few kilometers, you can find Priverno with the Fossanova Abbey, one of the most important examples of Cistercian-Gothic architecture in Italy, and the hiking trails of the Lepini Mountains.

A Pro Loco event

The event is entirely organized by the Pro Loco of Pisterzo, which involves dozens of local volunteers every year in preparing the stalls and welcoming guests. It is thanks to this collective effort that the festival continues to represent the main gathering of the year for a community of a few hundred inhabitants.
