In the village of Trivio, a hillside hamlet of Formia in the province of Latina, Christmas Eve has one focal point: the great Christmas Log (Ceppo) lit in Piazza Sant'Andrea. According to local records, this tradition began on December 24, 1860, thanks to the priest Don Giovanni Filosa. It has continued uninterrupted ever since, becoming one of the most enduring customs in the Gulf area, passed down through families and now organized by the Trivio Socio-Cultural Center and the local parish.

The roots of the custom

The ritual is rooted in a medieval practice documented as far back as the 12th century, where families would burn a large log in their home fireplace to last the twelve nights between Christmas and Epiphany, symbolizing warmth, prosperity, and continuity. In Trivio, this domestic practice evolved into a collective event: the fire moves from private hearths to the village square, where the entire community gathers.

How the evening unfolds

On the evening of December 24th, in the late afternoon, the community gathers in Piazza Sant'Andrea. The log is lit, and a simple, heartfelt celebration begins, featuring:

• distribution of traditional local Christmas sweets, including zeppole;
• Aurunci folk music, performed by local groups and musicians;
• toasts, storytelling, and family gatherings before Midnight Mass.

Beyond Christmas Eve: Christmas in the Village of Trivio

The lighting of the log is the highlight of a broader calendar, "Christmas in the Village of Trivio," which runs throughout the holiday season as part of the "Christmas in Formia" program, spanning from the town center to the hamlets of Maranola, Trivio, and Castellonorato. Recent editions have included evenings around the great hearth with tastings of grilled sausage, chestnuts, and wine, the traditional Sciuscio formiano — an ancient itinerant musical tradition of lower Lazio — and a closing party for children with the arrival of the Befana on January 6th.

The village and its landscape

Trivio sits on the slopes of the Aurunci Mountains, overlooking Formia, offering views of the gulf and the Pontine Islands on clear days. The village retains a compact layout of alleys, stairways, and small squares, making the festival particularly evocative as the glow of the fire reflects off the stone houses, turning the square into the community's living room for the night.
