Luigi Pirandello's theatre returns to his home city of Agrigento

Pirandello Week is the festival that brings the theatre of Luigi Pirandello back to the heart of his home city, Agrigento, the capital of the Sicilian province of the same name. Dedicated to the playwright and Nobel laureate who was born in the Caos district just outside the city, the event showcases Pirandellian works and creative reinterpretations performed by nationally acclaimed artists and companies.
The performances take place at the Teatro dell'Efebo, a stage set within an ancient tuff quarry. With its golden-hued walls, it offers a unique backdrop deeply connected to the Agrigento landscape. It is in this evocative setting, just a stone's throw from the Valley of the Temples, that audiences rediscover the tragic and ironic spirit of Pirandello's writing.
After an eighteen-year absence, Pirandello Week returned in 2025 for its 36th edition, reviving a historic tradition of Agrigento's cultural life. Promoted by the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Agrigento in collaboration with the Associazione Nuovo Piccolo Teatro di Agrigento, the festival weaves together prose, dance, and music, creating a dialogue between classic texts and modern stage interpretations.
The highlight of the closing night is the Premio Kaos Pippo Montalbano, an award named after the district of Pirandello's birth, which honours prominent figures in the world of culture. This event further strengthens the festival's bond with the local identity and the legacy of its most illustrious son.
Attending Pirandello Week means experiencing Pirandello's theatre exactly where it was born, in one of Sicily's most fascinating locations. For those visiting Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples in summer, it is the perfect opportunity to combine archaeological heritage with world-class theatre in a unique open-air setting.
