A masked parade in the heart of Val di Cornia, featuring Cicciolo, music, and tradition
The Piombino Carnival is one of the most cherished popular festivals in the Val di Cornia, located in the heart of the Livorno province in Tuscany. Every year, in the period leading up to Lent, the town center and the districts of Piombino fill with masks, confetti, music, and cheer in an event that blends tradition, children's entertainment, and community participation.
The true star of the Piombino Carnival is Cicciolo, the city's symbolic mask. Born in 1949 from the creativity of workers at the Magona, Piombino's historic steel plant, Cicciolo is a large wooden and papier-mâché figure with a red nose and a Carnival King crown, crafted by Antonio Sicari based on designs by Natale Mazzei. During the parades, Cicciolo is accompanied by a weeping widow who theatrically mourns his fate amidst confetti and streamers. Tradition dictates that the character concludes the festivities with the famous Viaggio di Cicciolo, the highlight and defining moment of the entire event.
The Piombino Carnival is not confined to a single location but spreads throughout the city's various districts. Local libraries host themed readings and workshops through the Storie in maschera (Masked Stories) initiative, while districts like Salivoli and Riotorto offer musical entertainment and creative workshops for children. The final day is dedicated to the grand masked parade, which starts at Piazza Costituzione and winds through the streets of the center, accompanied by a marching band, local dance schools, and the beauty queens from the twin Carnival of Follonica.
Historically considered one of the most anticipated carnivals in the province of Livorno, with its allegorical floats and elaborate costumes, the Piombino Carnival still retains its popular and identity-driven spirit today. The final burning of Cicciolo is linked to an ancient local belief: if the mask burns quickly, the summer will be long and hot. It is a ritual that symbolically burns away the worries of winter to make room for the warmer season.
Organized by the Municipality of Piombino together with the Pro Loco, the CCN 150 Vetrine, and in collaboration with the Follonica Carnival, the event is designed to unite the neighborhoods, promote the town center, and offer opportunities for sharing, music, and creativity. It is an event especially loved by families and children, who color the squares of Piombino with their costumes every year.
The 2026 Piombino Carnival was spread over a week of events, from February 11 to 17, involving the center and the city's neighborhoods. The edition, organized by the Municipality of Piombino with the Pro Loco, CCN 150 Vetrine, and the Follonica Carnival, combined moments for children and families with the grand final celebration on Shrove Tuesday.
As councilor Sabrina Nigro emphasized, the goal was to create an event capable of uniting the neighborhoods, promoting the center, and offering moments of sharing, music, and creativity.
The center of the festivities is Piazza Costituzione in Piombino (LI), the meeting point and starting place for the parade. Side events take place in the city libraries, in Salivoli (Piazza Berlinguer), and in Riotorto.
By car: Piombino can be reached via the SS398 from the Aurelia variant (SS1). By train: Campiglia Marittima station on the Tirrenica line, with connections to Piombino Marittima. By plane: Pisa and Florence airports are the closest.
Parades and events in the square are free of charge. Some children's workshops may require booking through the libraries or organizing associations.
The event is particularly suitable for families with children. We recommend wearing a costume and arriving early for the final parade, which is the busiest time of the day.
