The grand allegorical parade featuring local floats and the historic Casulot and Casuletta masks
In the heart of the plains south of Turin, the small town of Piobesi Torinese, located in the Province of Turin near Carmagnola, celebrates one of the most cherished moments of the calendar every year: the Carnival. The grand allegorical parade transforms the streets and squares of the town into an explosion of color, music, and joy, attracting families and curious visitors from across the Turin and Pinerolo areas.
The absolute protagonists of the Piobesi Carnival are the two historic local masks, Casulot and Casuletta. The origin of the nickname dates back to the late 18th century, stemming from a dispute between the Municipality of Piobesi Torinese and the inhabitants of neighboring towns regarding the unit of measurement for a ladle, called casul in Piedmontese. The two masks parade accompanied by the ladies of the Tower and the knight, in a procession that keeps a popular tradition deeply rooted in the town's identity alive.
The event brings together allegorical floats not only from Piobesi but also from neighboring towns—including Nichelino, Pinerolo, Scalenghe, Cavour, and Carmagnola—forming an authentic local carnival circuit. Along the route, masked groups, traditional majorettes, and the Filarmonica Piobesina parade, providing the musical backdrop for the entire day.
The convivial dimension is not to be missed: the Gruppo Alpini of Piobesi Torinese distributes hot drinks and traditional sweets along the route, while the inevitable bugie—the typical fried pastries of the Piedmontese Carnival—make the festival even more delicious. It is a free event open to everyone, designed primarily to engage children but capable of entertaining adults as well.
The Piobesi Torinese Carnival is part of a rich network of carnivals in the southern belt of Turin and the Saluzzo area: the local masks and floats often participate in parades and investitures in other Piedmontese towns, a sign of a vibrant, shared tradition that spans the entire Province of Turin.
The 2026 edition reprised the successful formula of the grand allegorical parade, with a route that crossed the center of Piobesi Torinese, involving adults and children in a day of color and music.
In the parade: allegorical floats from Piobesi, Nichelino, Pinerolo, Scalenghe, Cavour, and Carmagnola, the historic local masks (Casulot and Casuletta with the ladies of the Tower and the knight), masked groups, and traditional majorettes, accompanied by the Filarmonica Piobesina.
For 2026, the Gruppo Amici di Piobesi presented the float "King of Rhythm, Music Unites the World". Along the route, the Gruppo Alpini of Piobesi Torinese distributed hot drinks and traditional sweets.
Piobesi Torinese is located about 20 km south of Turin. By car, it is easily reached via the SP141 and the provincial roads of the Carmagnola area; by train, the Piobesi station is on the Turin–Saluzzo line (SFM service). During the parade, detours and traffic changes are expected in the town center.
The parade is free and takes place outdoors along the streets of the historic center. The departure is from Piazza della Costituzione.
Arrive a little early to find a spot along the route and experience the start of the floats. Seasonal clothing and masks for children are welcome.
