The pinnacolo tournament in the heart of Viano, on the Reggiano Apennines
In the Reggiano dialect, "in streda" means "in the street," and this is precisely the spirit of Pinnacolo in streda: a day when the Municipality of Viano, on the first hills of the Apennines in the province of Reggio Emilia, transforms its center into a large open-air gaming room. Tables and chairs are set up along the streets and squares of the village, and for one day, pinnacolo becomes the absolute protagonist.
Pinnacolo is a card game of twentieth-century origin, an ancestor of the more modern burraco, deeply rooted in the popular culture of Emilia-Romagna, and particularly in the Reggiano area. It is usually played in teams of two, with two decks of French cards, blending luck, memory, and strategy. In the clubs, community centers, and bars of the Apennines, it has been the pastime for generations, bringing friends and families together around a table, especially during long summer evenings.
More than a competitive tournament, Pinnacolo in streda is an occasion for the community of Viano and neighboring towns to gather. The event, which is free to attend, is part of the summer initiatives organized by the Pro Loco le Terre Matildiche along with the Municipality, and attracts enthusiasts of all ages. Between hands, there are the typical social moments of Reggiano village festivals, with the opportunity to stop for a chat and enjoy the fresh Apennine air.
Viano is located in the so-called Matildic Lands, the hilly territory linked to the figure of Matilda of Canossa, rich in castles, parish churches, and villages. It is also known for its Truffle Festival and for the "in streda" events that liven up its center throughout the year. Participating in Pinnacolo in streda is therefore also a way to discover an authentic and less touristy corner of the Reggiano Apennines, far from major events and close to the most genuine tradition.
The 2026 edition of Pinnacolo in streda is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the center of Viano, in the province of Reggio Emilia. The day, classified by the Municipality as an "open day" within leisure activities, brings the gaming tables back to the streets for a pinnacolo tournament open to enthusiasts of all ages.
The detailed program (meeting times, tournament registration procedures, any prizes, and refreshment point) is usually communicated in the days preceding the event through the channels of the Municipality of Viano and the Pro Loco le Terre Matildiche. For updated information, it is advisable to consult the events page of the municipal portal.
