About Madonna dell'Altare Pilgrimage

Every July 2nd, pilgrims set off from Palena, in the province of Chieti, to hike the trails of the Majella mountains up to the Celestinian Hermitage of the Madonna dell'Altare, perched at 1,272 meters on Monte Porrara. This centuries-old tradition, rooted in the first hermetic retreat of Pietro Angelerio—the future Pope Celestine V—culminates in a solemn Mass held before the sanctuary, which is carved directly into the rock.

An ancient pilgrimage on the Majella

The Pilgrimage to the Madonna dell'Altare is one of the most evocative devotional events in the Abruzzo hinterland. Every year on July 2nd, a procession of pilgrims departs from Palena—a small mountain village in the province of Chieti, at the foot of the Majella—to hike up to the Celestinian Hermitage of the Madonna dell'Altare, clinging to the rock of Monte Porrara at an altitude of approximately 1,272 meters.

In the footsteps of Celestine V

This site is among the most historically significant in the entire region. Between 1235 and 1238, the young Pietro Angelerio—the future Pope Celestine V—lived his first experience as a hermit in a mountain cave here. In the 14th century, his followers, gathered in the Celestinian order, built the current complex to preserve the memory of their founder: a small fortress-like church with living quarters and a hanging garden, protected on three sides by a sheer cliff. Today, the sanctuary is a destination for both the devout and hikers from all over Abruzzo.

The ascent on foot

The heart of the festival is the journey itself. Pilgrims leave the carriage road behind to tackle the ancient trail through the Majella woods, the same path that has led the faithful in prayer to the hermitage for centuries. The route, mapped by the Majella National Park (trail I2), winds along the mountainside through the Valle della Madonna, with a total elevation gain of about 400 meters and final stretches that climb steeply toward the rock face.

The celebrations

The day of July 2nd follows a rhythm marked by prayer: meeting at dawn in the village, the group ascent, the Holy Rosary, and the first Eucharistic celebration of the morning, leading up to the solemn Mass at 11:00 AM in front of the sanctuary. The Madonna dell'Altare is also celebrated on other occasions throughout the year, linked to the hermitage's liturgical calendar and the seasonal reopening of the sanctuary.

A heritage of Abruzzo

More than just a simple patronal feast, the July 2nd pilgrimage is a rite of identity for the community of Palena and the entire Majella, the "Mother Mountain" of the Abruzzese people. The combination of popular faith, the wild nature of the National Park, and the Celestinian memory makes this event an authentic experience, far removed from mass tourism circuits.

Madonna dell'Altare Pilgrimage — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the pilgrimage took place on July 2nd with the traditional walk from Palena to the Celestinian Hermitage of the Madonna dell'Altare. Meeting at dawn in Piazza Municipio, the ascent followed the Majella's I2 trail, concluding with celebrations on the sanctuary's forecourt at an altitude of 1,272 meters.

The 2026 Pilgrimage to the Madonna dell'Altare was held on July 2nd. The day followed the usual program: meeting at dawn in the village of Palena, a group ascent along the ancient Majella trail, and celebrations in front of the hermitage. Once again this year, numerous faithful and hikers reached the sanctuary on Monte Porrara on foot.
