Spring blooms in the Val d'Orcia, amidst Italian-style gardens, art, and music
Pienza and Flowers is the grand spring festival that brings Pienza to life every May. Known as the "ideal city" envisioned by Pope Pius II in the 15th century, it is now a Renaissance gem nestled in the Val d'Orcia, in the province of Siena. Now in its 39th edition in 2026, the event turns the historic center into a path of colors and scents, creating a dialogue between the town's ideal architecture and the ephemeral beauty of flowers.
The beating heart of the event is the elegant Italian-style garden that has been set up annually since 2008 in the center of Piazza Pio II, in front of the Cathedral and Palazzo Piccolomini. Thousands of plants and flowers (petunias, rosemary, natural lawns) are arranged each year into a different design, inspired by a symbolic theme. In 2026, the garden reproduces the UNESCO logo, paying tribute to the 30th anniversary of Pienza's recognition as a World Heritage site in 1996.
For about two weeks, the event offers a packed calendar of initiatives spread across the city's most evocative spots: the "Crafts and Flowers" fair in Piazza Dante Alighieri, classical and opera music concerts in churches and historic courtyards, painting exhibitions at the City Museum, contemporary art installations, and food and wine experiences featuring floral ingredients. Everything highlights the deep bond between Pienza, its territory, and the culture of beauty.
More than just a flower market, Pienza and Flowers has become a defining event for the entire Val d'Orcia, a landscape also protected by UNESCO. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Pienza "Dario Formichi" together with the Natural Shopping Center, under the patronage of the Municipality of Pienza, and attracts visitors from all over Tuscany and abroad every year, drawn by the unique combination of nature, art, and Renaissance atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of Pienza and Flowers celebrated an important anniversary: 30 years since the UNESCO recognition of the city. For the occasion, the elegant Italian-style garden set up in Piazza Pio II by engineer Lidia D'Errico reproduced the UNESCO logo, in a symbolic tribute to Pienza's identity and universal value. The program, spread over two weekends, combined classical and opera music, contemporary art, crafts, and food and wine experiences, all with free admission.
By car: Pienza can be reached via the SS2 Cassia (exit for Val d'Orcia) or the SP146 connecting San Quirico d'Orcia to Montepulciano. By train: the nearest stations are Chiusi-Chianciano Terme and Sinalunga, connected to Pienza by Tiemme bus lines. The most convenient airport is Florence-Peretola.
Admission to all events is free. Some guided tours (e.g., to the Tenuta Bottega Verde) require mandatory booking.
Pienza's historic center is pedestrian-only: it is best to park in the lots outside the walls. We recommend combining your visit with a walk along the famous Val d'Orcia panorama and tasting the Pecorino di Pienza, a local delicacy.
