A month of celebrations, music, and tradition in the four Districts of Montalcino
Every weekend in June, the four historic Districts of Montalcino—Borghetto, Travaglio, Ruga, and Pianello—animate the town's historic center with cultural, musical, and gastronomic events open to residents and visitors alike. As the organizers note, these patronal festivals represent "an important opportunity to celebrate the history, traditions, and strong sense of community" that has always defined this village in the province of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany and the Brunello hills.
The Districts of Montalcino are not merely administrative divisions, but true communities with centuries of history. Each is traditionally linked to ancient trades and crafts: Borghetto to notaries and carpenters, Pianello to potters and tanners, Ruga to merchants and wool-makers, and Travaglio to blacksmiths and apothecaries. This district identity is revived every autumn during the famous Sagra del Tordo, with its historical costume pageant and the archery challenge for the coveted trophy: the June patronal festivals serve as an intimate and convivial summer prelude.
The month kicks off with Borghetto and the fifteenth edition of the Montalcino Music Circus, held in Piazza Garibaldi, also known as "Piazza Padella." Two musical evenings enliven the square: "Rock in Movie," dedicated to rock soundtracks from cinema, and "'80 Febbre," a dive into the atmosphere of the eighties. Free admission, with a food and beverage area featuring wine bars, beer, and street food.
Travaglio celebrates its patron saint, San Donnolo Donnoli, with three days dedicated to conviviality, culture, faith, and tradition. On Friday the 12th, starting at 7:00 PM, the "Notte Giallo Rossa" on Via Donnoli brings street food, games, music, and DJ sets. On Saturday the 13th, after the 6:30 PM aperitif, the "Musica all'Imbrunire" concert at 7:00 PM in the Chiesa dell'Osservanza features maestro Giorgio Albiani, a professor at the "L. Cherubini" Conservatory of Florence, with the program "From Fandango to the Divine Comedy - The guitar on a journey between dance, memory, and vision." Sunday the 14th begins with breakfast at 10:00 AM, the procession at 10:30 AM, Mass at 11:30 AM in the Chiesa dell'Osservanza, a community lunch at 1:00 PM on Via Donnoli, and the archery competition at 4:30 PM.
Ruga, dedicated to the Holy Savior (SS. Salvatore), presents the Ruga Summer Fest at the Prato del Duomo. On June 19th, the evening starts at 6:00 PM with the play "Non è come sembra, è anche peggio" by the Teatro dell'Accatto. At 7:30 PM, food stands open with pizza, grilled meats, cocktail bars, and beer; followed by live music from the Old Stuff Band and the Papillon DJ set by DJ Ciccio Minucci, featuring sounds from the nineties and two-thousands. Free admission.
Closing the June calendar are the festivities of Pianello, dedicated to the patron saints Peter and Paul. On June 26th, the traditional Beer Festival returns, featuring conviviality, gastronomy, and entertainment, with the program continuing on June 27th and 29th.
Experiencing the patronal festivals of the Districts means discovering Montalcino away from the main tourist circuits, immersed in the daily life and community spirit of its inhabitants. Between a concert in the square, an archery competition, and a glass of fine wine, it is the ideal occasion to get to know the traditions of one of Tuscany's most beloved villages up close.
Montalcino can be reached by car from the SS2 Cassia (Buonconvento exit) or from the Siena-Grosseto road; it is about 40 km from Siena. The nearest train station is Buonconvento, connected to Montalcino by bus. Main airports: Florence and Pisa.
Events take place in the historic center of Montalcino (Piazza Garibaldi, Prato del Duomo, Via Donnoli, Chiesa dell'Osservanza) throughout the weekends of June. Most events offer free admission.
The historic center is largely pedestrianized: we recommend parking in the areas outside the walls. Don't miss a visit to the Brunello wineries and the Fortress.
