About Piedmont Regional Chess Championship

The Piedmont Absolute Regional Chess Championship is the annual event that crowns the region's best player. The 2026 edition was held in Nichelino, in the province of Turin, from April 30th to May 3rd: a seven-round open tournament, valid for both Elo Italia and FIDE rankings, reserved for Italian players. Four days of intense competition on the chessboard, with a record participation of over 70 Piedmontese chess players.

The championship that crowns the king of Piedmontese chess

The Piedmont Absolute Regional Chess Championship is the competition that awards the title of absolute regional champion every year, the most prestigious recognition for chess players in the region. It is a seven-round open tournament using the Swiss system, valid for both Elo Italia and international FIDE rankings, and reserved for Italian players.

The 2026 edition was hosted by the Municipality of Nichelino, in the Turin metropolitan area, in the province of Turin. The event took place at the A.D. Scacchi Nichelino hall, on Via Damiano Chiesa, transforming the Piedmontese town into the regional capital of competitive chess for four days.

A high-level competitive format

The tournament is played with a long time control: 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, a timing that rewards deep calculation and mental endurance. The seven rounds are spread over four days, with some double-round days to condense the entire championship into a long weekend. Officiating is entrusted to qualified arbiters, ensuring the regularity and validity of the tournament for rating purposes.

Who can participate

The competition is reserved for Italian players and gathers the best of the Piedmontese chess scene every year, from masters to club players. Special rankings are provided for Elo rating brackets and dedicated categories (women's, under, over 50, and over 65), ensuring every participant can aim for an award. The absolute winner earns not only the regional title but also access to the subsequent stages of the Italian Absolute Championship.

A growing movement

Piedmontese chess is experiencing a season of great vitality: the 2026 edition saw the participation of over seventy players, more than double the number of the previous edition. The organization is managed by A.D. Scacchi Nichelino, one of the most active local groups, which brought a significant event for all of Piedmont to the province of Turin. For enthusiasts, attending an absolute regional championship means watching the game at its highest local level, in a focused and silent atmosphere punctuated by the ticking of clocks.
