A village festival at the foot of Mount Macaion

The Pfingstfest der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Unterrain is the annual Pentecost festival organized by the Volunteer Fire Department of Riva di Sotto (known in German as Unterrain), a village in the municipality of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße), in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Oltradige region. For two days, the Festplatz Unterrain on Unterrainer Straße transforms into a gathering spot for the entire community and visitors alike, nestled among apple orchards and vineyards at the foot of Mount Macaion.

Two days of music, good food, and cheer

The festival's motto perfectly captures its spirit: two days of celebration with music, great food, and the best atmosphere. Under the marquee, volunteers serve grilled dishes, drinks, and homemade cakes, while local South Tyrolean bands take the stage, keeping the mood lively for all ages. It is a genuine South Tyrolean village festival where conviviality and a sense of community are just as important as the program itself.

An event designed for families

The Pfingstfest has always been a family-friendly affair. The festival area features a large bouncy castle and other entertainment for the little ones, allowing children to have fun while adults enjoy the music and local specialties. Free admission and daytime hours, typically from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, make the event accessible to everyone.

The Volunteer Fire Department, the heart of the community

As in many South Tyrolean villages, the Volunteer Fire Department of Riva di Sotto is much more than an emergency service; it is a cornerstone of local social life. The Pfingstfest is both a popular celebration and a fundraiser for the volunteers, with proceeds supporting the purchase of equipment and the maintenance of the department. Riva di Sotto and the Wine Road

Situated on the western edge of Appiano at an altitude of about 240 meters, Riva di Sotto is a village with a rich history: its small church dedicated to Saint Nicholas recalls its past role as a customs station along transit routes. Today, the village is surrounded by the orchards and vineyards of the Oltradige, along the famous South Tyrolean Wine Road. Visitors to the Pfingstfest can combine the celebration with a walk through the blooming apple orchards or a stop at local wineries.
