The short film festival in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pettineo Short Movie Fest is a fresh film festival dedicated to short cinema, held in Pettineo, a small hillside village in the province of Messina, deep within the Nebrodi Park in Sicily. The event is promoted by the Small Shaker cultural association in partnership with the Municipality of Pettineo and held its inaugural edition in June 2025, with support from the European Union.
The festival features an international competition for short films, divided into three main categories:
Entries must not exceed 30 minutes in length, including credits. Participation is free, and foreign-language works must be subtitled in Italian. The jury awards cash prizes to the best works in each category, alongside special mentions from both the technical and popular juries.
Festival evenings are held outdoors in Contrada Porracina, a rural setting that transforms this small Nebrodi village into a hub for short cinema for a few days. Between screenings, the audience can meet directors and authors in the informal and convivial atmosphere typical of Sicilian villages. The festival thus blends a passion for short film with the promotion of the local area, offering visitors the chance to discover an authentic corner of inland Sicily.
Despite its recent inception, the Pettineo Short Movie Fest has quickly established itself as a highly anticipated event for filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts, attracting works from numerous countries. Its focus on the Sicily section makes it an important showcase for emerging island cinema, helping to narrate the region's identity and landscapes through the eyes of young filmmakers.
The second edition of the Pettineo Short Movie Fest is currently in preparation. A section dedicated to the "2026 Competition" has appeared on the official website, though it is still being set up. Precise dates and the program have not yet been announced. Given that the first edition was held at the end of June 2025 in Contrada Porracina in Pettineo, it is likely that the 2026 edition will also take place during the summer. To find out about the call for entries, deadlines, and the screening schedule, please consult the festival's official website and social media profiles.
Pettineo is located in the Nebrodi hills in the province of Messina, just a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the Castel di Lucio-Pettineo or Santo Stefano di Camastra exits). The nearest train station is Santo Stefano di Camastra-Mistretta on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car into the hinterland.
Festival screenings take place outdoors in Contrada Porracina. For information on dates, programs, and how to participate, please check the official website and the festival's social media channels.
