The traditional patronal festival of the Petschied hamlet in Luson, South Tyrol
The Petschieder Kirchtag is the annual patronal feast of the hamlet of Petschied, a tiny village in the municipality of Luson/Lüsen, nestled at an altitude of about 1,100 meters among the spruce forests of the Isarco Valley, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). The very name Petschied derives from the Latin picetum, meaning "spruce forest," a testament to the dense coniferous landscape surrounding the few houses scattered along the village road.
The heart of the festival is the small church of San Nicolò (St. Nikolaus), which stands at the entrance to Petschied when arriving from Lüsen. The current building dates back to 1513, but the church's origins go back to the 12th century. Inside, it houses a valuable 18th-century Simnacher organ, restored in 2005, and near the choir, a spring flows that popular tradition once credited with healing properties for the eyes. It is around this place of worship that the community has gathered for the Kirchtag for generations.
The festival traditionally takes place at the end of June and revolves around the religious and musical moments that mark the day:
The Petschieder Kirchtag is organized by the Schützenkompanie Rosenthal Lüsen, the traditional rifle company that, together with the Musikkapelle Lüsen, safeguards the village's cultural identity. The Schützen in historical costumes and the band's uniforms give the festival that solemn yet popular character typical of South Tyrolean festivals, where the sense of community belonging (Dorfleben) intertwines with religious devotion.
Far from the major tourist flows, the Petschied Kirchtag offers a genuine glimpse into South Tyrolean mountain life. Those who attend discover not just a festival, but an entire way of experiencing the territory: faith, brass band music, traditional costumes, and the alpine landscape of the municipality of Luson, in the green heart of the Isarco Valley.
The 2026 Petschieder Kirchtag took place on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, in the hamlet of Petschied in the municipality of Luson/Lüsen (South Tyrol). The event, officially announced by the Südtiroler Schützenbund and organized by the Schützenkompanie Rosenthal Lüsen, once again featured the moments that have always characterized the festival: the solemn mass at the small church of San Nicolò, the procession of Saint Ulrich, and the Marschkonzert by the Musikkapelle Lüsen. A day of celebration and tradition among the woods of the Isarco Valley.
Petschied is a hamlet of the municipality of Luson/Lüsen, reachable by car from the Isarco Valley: take the A22 motorway exit at Bressanone/Brixen, then follow the road to Luson and the hamlet of Petschied (about 3 km southeast of the center of Lüsen, at an altitude of 1,100 m). A hiking trail (path 1) connects Lüsen to Petschied in about 40 minutes on foot.
The festival is traditionally held at the end of June, with typical hours from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
As this is a mountain village festival, comfortable clothing suitable for potential weather changes at altitude is recommended. Admission to the festival is free.
