The Ferragosto pilgrimage to the sanctuary on Monte Pierno
About ten kilometers from the town of San Fele, perched at almost a thousand meters above sea level on the slopes of Monte Pierno (1268 m), stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pierno: a rocky and silent place, rich in springs and surrounded by dense chestnut woods. Here, every year between August 14th and 15th, coinciding with the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, one of the oldest and most heartfelt pilgrimages in the Lucanian Vulture takes place.
Tradition traces the cult back to 1130, when monks living on Monte Santa Croce, to escape a Saracen pirate raid, took refuge in the woods near Monte Pierno and hid a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. A church was later built on the site of the discovery, which became a sanctuary and was consecrated in 1221. After the earthquake of 1456 – legend has it – the statue mysteriously reappeared on the mountain, and the sanctuary was entirely rebuilt. Devotion has never ceased since then.
The heart of the pilgrimage is the night spent at the sanctuary: the faithful climb the mountain and camp in the surrounding area, keeping vigil until dawn in an atmosphere suspended between prayer, song, and conviviality. The statue of the Madonna is carried in procession on shoulders, accompanied by a crowd from all over Basilicata and the San Fele diaspora – emigrants who return every summer specifically for this event. Among the most characteristic devotional gestures are the arboreal votive offerings: branches and small trees brought to the sanctuary as ex-votos, alongside anatomical, photographic, and epigraphic ex-votos.
The anthropological significance of this rite has been recognized by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage, which has included it among the festivals and traditions that are part of Italy's intangible heritage. For the Municipality of San Fele, in the Province of Potenza, the pilgrimage to Pierno remains the highest point of the religious and identity calendar.
For Ferragosto 2026, the ancient appointment at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pierno is renewed. The faithful ascend the mountain on the evening of August 14th, spending the night in vigil in the area surrounding the sanctuary; on August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption, the celebration culminates with the solemn Mass and the procession of the statue carried on shoulders. The arboreal votive offerings and ex-votos remain alive, signs of a devotion that spans centuries.
The religious program follows the traditional structure of the festival:
The detailed program with celebration times will be released by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the festival.
