The patronal festival of Venosa in honour of Saint Roch
The Festa Patronale di San Rocco is the heart of the religious tradition of Venosa. Devotion to the saint dates back to 1503, when the city was struck by a terrible plague and the inhabitants invoked the protection of Saint Roch, a healer against epidemics. As a vow of gratitude, a church was built near the Santissima Trinitร complex, and since then Saint Roch has been co-protector of Venosa along with Saint Felice of Thibiuca.
The climax of the festival is the procession: the 19th-century statue of the saint is carried through the ancient streets of the city by confraternity members in uniform, with the characteristic green cape. Solemn masses are celebrated in the Cathedral of Venosa, in an atmosphere of intense popular participation that unites faith and civic identity. Historically, the festival was celebrated for a long time in September, to allow farmers to complete the harvest, before settling on the mid-August dates.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the Festa di San Rocco is also a major community event: the historic centre is illuminated by lights, fills with stalls, and hosts concerts, musical performances, and entertainment, culminating in the unmissable fireworks display. An occasion when the people of Venosa, including those who have emigrated, return to gather around their patron saint.
The festival is also an invitation to discover Venosa, listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy, with its extraordinary heritage: the Abbey of Santissima Trinitร , the Archaeological Park, the Pirro del Balzo Castle, and the places linked to the poet Horace.
The Festa Patronale di San Rocco will once again animate Venosa from August 16 to 18, 2026. Three days that intertwine the religious dimension, with the procession of the saint's statue and solemn masses in the Cathedral, and the popular dimension, with lights, stalls, music, and festivities in the historic centre.
The devotion to Saint Roch, protector of Venosa since 1503, makes this festival the most heartfelt identity event for the community of Venosa.
The festival traditionally spans three days (August 16-18, 2026) with the following structure:
