About San Rufo Feast

Every year at the end of August, Castel di Sangro pays tribute to its patron saint, San Rufo, with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the Alto Sangro region. Featuring religious rites, a three-day prayer triduum, a procession through the town center, a brass band, a major evening concert that draws thousands from across Abruzzo, Molise, and Campania, and a grand fireworks display, the festival unites popular devotion with the vibrant spirit of a traditional village fair in the heart of the L'Aquila mountains.

The patronal feast of Castel di Sangro

The San Rufo Patronal Feast is the most anticipated summer event in Castel di Sangro, a town in the province of L'Aquila nestled in the Alto Sangro area of Abruzzo. Every year, towards the end of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious observance and popular festivities, attracting visitors from neighboring towns and the nearby regions of Molise and Campania.

Who was San Rufo

According to tradition, San Rufo was born into a Roman family in the 1st century AD. After embracing the Christian faith, he became known for his charity and preaching, eventually suffering martyrdom during the persecutions. His feast day is celebrated on August 27th, the date his cult was officially recognized. In Castel di Sangro, the saint is venerated in the Basilica Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, a stunning monument that dominates the historic center and houses the town's deep-rooted devotion.

Religious Rites

The festivities open with a triduum of preparation: in the days leading up to the feast, the community gathers in the church for the recitation of the Rosary and the celebration of Holy Mass. The feast day itself is marked by solemn services and the traditional procession, which carries the effigy of the saint through the streets of the center, accompanied by the faithful, local authorities, and the notes of the brass band, which also performs a morning tour of the town.

Popular festivities and major concerts

Alongside the religious devotion, the San Rufo Feast is famous for its major evening concert, the highlight of the secular celebrations. Over the years, Castel di Sangro has hosted renowned names in Italian music, with free performances in the square that fill the town center. The evening culminates late at night with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the mountains, cheered on by the thousands of people in attendance.

An identity-defining event for the Alto Sangro

More than just a simple anniversary, the festival represents a moment of collective identity for the community of Castel di Sangro. It is an occasion when emigrants and families return to their hometown, where local associations and the Festivities Committee collaborate with the parish to organize days full of events, and where religious tradition and the vitality of a village fair coexist in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains.

San Rufo Feast โ€” edition 2026

In 2026, Castel di Sangro will once again celebrate its patron saint, San Rufo, with the traditional end-of-August festivities. The dates and official program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Festivities Committee and the parish: as every year, the religious triduum, the procession, the brass band, a major evening concert, and the final fireworks display are expected.

The festivities in honor of San Rufo, patron saint of Castel di Sangro, will return in 2026 according to the tradition that sees the community gather towards the end of August, around the anniversary of August 27th. At the moment, the exact dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the organizers.

Based on previous editions, the program should include religious celebrations in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the procession through the historic center, musical accompaniment by the brass band, a major free evening concert, and the concluding fireworks display. Details will be communicated by the Festivities Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
