Three days of faith and tradition in honor of Saint Benedict the Abbot, the Blessed Virgin of Casaluce, and Saint Anthony
In the heart of the L'Aquila hinterland, perched at an altitude of about 850 meters on the Navelli plateau between the foothills of the Gran Sasso and the Sirente massif, the medieval village of San Benedetto in Perillis celebrates its Patronal Feast every year in early June. In a municipality with just over a hundred inhabitants, these days represent the most intense moment of the year, drawing back emigrants and their descendants from all over Italy and abroad.
The feast honors three sacred figures deeply rooted in local devotion: Saint Benedict the Abbot, who gives his name to the village and to whose fortified Benedictine monastery—dating back to the 8th–11th centuries—the town owes its origins; the Blessed Virgin of Casaluce, whose veneration is the focus of the central day's festivities; and Saint Anthony, a protector dear to the local farming community.
The program alternates between liturgical moments and popular events: holy masses, the procession of the Madonna's statue through the narrow stone streets of the historic center, music, and the traditional fireworks lit in honor of the Virgin of Casaluce. The community itself, gathered around the Pro Loco of San Benedetto in Perillis, organizes every detail, often supported by fundraising and contributions from local entities and foundations.
The feast is also the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the Abruzzo interior: the 13th-century Church of San Sebastiano overlooking Piazza Don Luigi Sturzo, the ancient Benedictine Abbey in the small fortified village, the Anthropological Museum housed in a restored 18th-century olive mill, and local specialties like quadrinelle and ferratelle. The Patronal Feast of San Benedetto in Perillis is a small, authentic slice of the most genuine Abruzzo, where faith and tradition keep the soul of a community alive.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of San Benedetto in Perillis was held from Friday, June 5th to Sunday, June 7th, in honor of Saint Benedict the Abbot, the Blessed Virgin of Casaluce, and Saint Anthony. On Friday, June 5th, the traditional fireworks dedicated to the Madonna of Casaluce were lit.
The heart of the edition was June 6th, with the Liturgy of Veneration, Holy Mass, and Procession for the return to the community of the precious wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin of Casaluce, dating back to 1700, restored to the faithful after a delicate restoration intervention. The initiative was supported by a fundraiser promoted by the Pro Loco and the contribution of the Fondazione Carispaq.
San Benedetto in Perillis is located in the municipality of the same name (province of L'Aquila), on the Navelli plateau. By car, it is accessible from the A25 motorway (Bussi-Popoli exit) and the SS17 road, following signs for Navelli and the village. The nearest train station is Popoli-Vittorito.
The Patronal Feast takes place every year in early June, spanning three days of celebrations.
Participation in religious celebrations and public events in the square is free and open to everyone.
The village is small and full of picturesque corners: we recommend exploring it on foot, wearing comfortable shoes for the stone alleys, and taking advantage of the feast to taste traditional Abruzzese rural dishes.
