The patronal feast of Castri di Lecce, blending faith and Salento tradition
The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the most important annual event for Castri di Lecce, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region. Every year, around June 14th and 15th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, folk tradition, and public festivities. Saint Vitus is venerated by the locals alongside Our Lady of the Visitation, whose celebrations follow just a few days later.
The cult of the saint is tied to the Church of Saint Vitus, located in Piazza Caduti and built in 1764 on the ruins of a previous 16th-century structure. Inside, it houses a gold-lacquered statue of the saint, Baroque artworks, and a fine 18th-century organ, while a column of Lecce stone dedicated to the martyr stands in front of the church. This is the starting point for the solemn procession during the feast days, where the statue of Saint Vitus is carried through the town streets, accompanied by the faithful, a brass band, and traditional music.
The religious festivities last for two days and include Holy Masses, the procession, and traditional fireworks. A particularly characteristic moment is the blessing of the animals: in the afternoon, dogs, horses, donkeys, and other animals are brought before the church to receive a blessing. Over time, the custom has expanded to include carts, small trucks, and cars, in a charming blend of Christian tradition and rural folk culture.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast offers a rich secular program. The streets of the center are illuminated with traditional Salento luminarie (decorative lights), while the squares host concerts and musical performances, entertainment for children, and lively evenings. The food stalls offer the best of Salento and Apulian cuisine, from traditional local peasant dishes to sweet specialties, creating a culinary journey for residents and visitors alike.
The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr represents one of the many authentic faces of summer in Salento: a village festival that keeps the bond between the community, its faith, and its roots intact. For those visiting Apulia in June, Castri di Lecce offers the chance to experience a genuine patronal feast, far from the major tourist crowds and full of human warmth.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr in Castri di Lecce was held on Sunday, June 14, and Monday, June 15, with the usual program of religious rites and secular festivities. The Municipality of Castri di Lecce officially marked the occasion with the announcement of the closure of municipal offices for Monday, June 15.
Opening the festivities on Saturday, June 13, starting at 9:30 PM in Piazza Caduti, was the Cartoon Dance Festival with DJ Jump and Nadia Dolce: a touring format dedicated to dance versions of cartoon theme songs and the greatest hits of the 90s and 2000s, organized by the EpMusic agency with the patronage of the Municipality. The following days featured Holy Masses, the solemn procession with the saintโs statue, the blessing of the animals, Salento food stalls, and the concluding fireworks display.
Castri di Lecce is located a few kilometers southeast of Lecce. By car, it is easily reached from the provincial capital via the Salento provincial roads. The nearest train station is in Lecce, which is well-connected to Bari and the rest of Italy; from there, you can continue by car or local bus. The reference airport is Brindisi.
The feast traditionally takes place on June 14th and 15th, with secular events often held in the days immediately preceding.
Religious celebrations, the procession, concerts in the square, the decorative lights, and the fireworks are free of charge.
