The patronal festival of San Pietro in Lama, in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, in the second half of July, the small village of San Pietro in Lama — home to just over three thousand residents in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento — lights up for its patronal feast. Saint Peter the Apostle, who gives the town its name, is its protector, and his feast day is the moment of the year when the entire community reunites in a blend of faith, tradition, and joy. The streets of the historic center fill with illuminations, music, and visitors arriving from the neighboring towns of the Lecce area.
The town's name is rooted in an ancient legend: it is said that in 43 AD, the apostle Peter, on his way to Rome, crossed a local marshy area — the lama — to avoid the pagan city of Lecce. Hence the name San Pietro in Lama, once also known as "San Pietro de l'imbrici" due to the historic artisanal production of terracotta roof tiles. Devotion to the apostle is therefore deeply rooted in the community's identity, which renews its bond with its patron saint every year.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle: the statue of the saint is carried on shoulders through the streets of the town, accompanied by the clergy, the faithful, and the brass band. The day is marked by liturgical celebrations, a solemn mass, and moments of collective prayer, in an atmosphere of reflection that keeps the popular devotion passed down from generation to generation alive.
Alongside the religious aspect, the festival offers a rich secular program. Artistic illuminations light up the streets and squares, the brass band performs from the traditional bandstand set up in the center of town, and the evenings give way to live concerts and folk performances. To close the evenings, the inevitable fireworks color the Salento sky, capturing the gaze of both adults and children.
During the festival days, there is no shortage of food stalls featuring specialties of Salento cuisine: pittule, rustic sandwiches, traditional sweets, and local wines accompany the market stalls that enliven the town. The period coincides with other summer initiatives in the village, such as the nearby Sagra dei Sapori Antichi, dedicated to the local food and wine traditions.
San Pietro in Lama is located just a few kilometers from the Salento capital, in an area with ancient Messapian and Roman roots: nearby stood the ancient city of Rudiae, the birthplace of the Latin poet Quintus Ennius. Visiting the town during the patronal feast is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Puglia, made of small communities, 17th-century churches, and traditions that are still deeply alive.
The San Pietro in Lama Festival Committee has not yet released the official dates and the full program for the 2026 edition.
