The grand patronal feast of Trani, featuring the seaside Cathedral and a maritime procession
Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim is the patron saint of the city of Trani, in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BT), Puglia. A young pilgrim of Greek origin, he arrived in the city carrying a simple cry of faith, the Kyrie eleison, and died there on June 2, 1094, at just nineteen years old. He was proclaimed a saint a few years later, in 1099, becoming the spiritual symbol of the Trani community. Even today, his humble and itinerant figure inspires the theme that accompanies the celebrations every year: «Pilgrims with the Pilgrim».
The most solemn moment from a religious perspective is the anniversary of the saint's blessed transit on June 2, celebrated annually in the Cathedral Basilica. The days are marked by the preparatory triduum, holy masses, the Eucharistic concelebration presided over by the Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie, and the procession of the venerated image through the streets of the center. The festival also maintains a strong ecumenical dimension, with moments of prayer and liturgies linked to the Orthodox tradition, in memory of the saint's Greek origins.
The most spectacular and beloved aspect for the people of Trani is the summer patronal feast, which enlivens the historic center and the harbor between late July and early August. The highlight is the famous maritime procession: the sacred image is embarked at the Santa Lucia pier onto a festively decorated fishing boat and led along the coast to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Colonna, accompanied by a parade of boats and greeted by fireworks displays over the water. The event also features brass band concerts, live music, illuminations lighting up alleys and squares, food stalls with local specialties, and a spectacular fireworks competition.
An irreplaceable backdrop for the festival is the Cathedral of Trani, one of the masterpieces of Puglian Romanesque architecture, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim and built right on the Adriatic Sea. His relics are kept in the crypt, a destination for devotion throughout the year. Experiencing the festival means wandering through the medieval historic center, among churches, palaces, and the ancient port, in one of the most evocative settings in the Municipality of Trani.
The Patronal Feast is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee of Trani together with the Archdiocese, involving confraternities, associations, merchants, and families. Alongside the rites are solidarity initiatives, such as collecting goods for the needy, blood drives, and visits to places of vulnerability. It is an identity-defining event that weaves together faith, history, and civic life, representing one of the most authentic seaside patronal celebrations in Puglia.
The 2026 edition marked the 932nd anniversary of the blessed transit of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, patron saint of Trani. The liturgical program opened on May 20 and included a blood donation day with AVIS (May 23) and the preparatory triduum from May 30 to June 1, featuring the presentation of the volume «Con tutto il cuore», the rosary, holy masses, and the rite of the Pious Transit together with youth pastoral care.
June 2, the main day, began at dawn with cannon shots and the «P. Mascagni» band through the city streets; at 11:30 AM, mass was held at the church of San Nicolino, and at 6:30 PM, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration presided over by Archbishop Leonardo D'Ascenzo took place, followed by the procession of the sacred image through Piazza Duomo and the historic center. A particularly moving moment was the reception of the relics of Saint Francis of Assisi in the Cathedral.
By train: Trani station is on the Adriatic line, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center and the Cathedral.
By car: Take the Trani/Andria-Barletta exit from the A14 motorway, then follow signs for the center/port. During the festival, the historic center is largely pedestrianized: it is recommended to park in the outer areas.
By plane: Bari-Palese airport is about 45 km away, with rail connections to Trani.
All religious and civil celebrations are free to attend. For the maritime procession and fireworks, vantage points on the port and the seafront fill up quickly: it is best to arrive early. Visiting the Cathedral and the historic center is also recommended during the day.
