Three days of devotion, music, and white nights in the heart of Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Sabato Valley, just a few kilometers from Avellino, the town of San Michele di Serino takes its name from its patron saint: Saint Michael the Archangel. Every year, the Irpinian community of just over two thousand residents gathers around his figure for a festival that blends religious devotion with popular tradition, transforming the town's streets and squares into a single, shared space for a few days.
Visitors to San Michele di Serino soon discover that the local calendar features two distinct observances. September 29th is the liturgical feast of the Archangel, celebrated in church with solemn services but without external festivities. The actual civil celebrationsโcomplete with illuminations, music, and market stallsโtake place in the height of summer, around the second Sunday of August, when the town is bustling and those living away return for their holidays. This is the date the locals simply call "the feast."
The well-established format features three consecutive days organized by the festival committee in collaboration with the parish. In the 2025 edition, festivities took place on August 8th, 9th, and 10th. For several years, the evenings have taken on the character of white nights, with food stalls set up by local merchants and restaurateurs along the festival route: shops open late, tastings, outdoor dining, and performances scattered throughout the town center.
The centerpiece remains the solemn procession with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which in past editions has departed from the Mother Church in the late afternoon on Sunday, around 6 PM, to wind through the town streets accompanied by a marching band and a large crowd of faithful. The final day begins with Eucharistic celebrations and, in some editions, has been graced by the presence of the Bishop of Avellino for a solemn mass.
The heart of the civil festivities is Piazza Umberto I, the center of town. Over the years, the program has featured a diverse range of genres: brass bands and lyrical-symphonic concerts on the final day, folk groups and itinerant tarantella dancers, dance school performances, dialect theater, and silent discos for younger crowds. In 2022, the square's stage hosted the Irpinian rapper BigMama, a sign of a committee attentive to contemporary trends.
San Michele di Serino is part of the Province of Avellino, in Campania, and is located in the Serino basin, an area known for the springs that have supplied Naples' aqueduct for centuries and for its vibrant agricultural traditions. The local potato is one of the territory's signature products, celebrated in August with a dedicated festival organized by the Pro Loco. Visitors during the feast will find not only entertainment but also a genuine opportunity to taste Irpinian cuisine and experience a community that celebrates with great passion.
As of this update, the detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Following tradition, festivities are expected to take place around the second Sunday of August; it is advisable to check the final dates on the channels of the parish, the festival committee, or the Municipality before traveling.
The official dates for the patronal feast of San Michele di Serino, in the province of Avellino, have not yet been released for 2026. Local tradition places the civil festivities around the second Sunday of August, as was the case for the 2025 edition (August 8th-10th), while September 29th remains reserved solely for the liturgical feast of the Archangel.
When the festival committee publishes the schedule, the usual structure is expected: three evenings of performances in Piazza Umberto I, white nights with food stalls from local merchants, a marching band and a closing concert, and above all, the solemn procession with the patron saint's statue through the town center. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
San Michele di Serino is located in the province of Avellino, about ten kilometers from the provincial capital. By car, it is accessible via the Avellino-Salerno highway, which crosses the Sabato Valley; the journey from Naples takes just over an hour. The reference train station is Avellino, connected to the town by local bus lines.
The festivities unfold in the town center: Piazza Umberto I is the main hub for evening performances, while the Mother Church is the site of religious celebrations and the starting point of the procession.
The patronal feast takes place in the town's streets and squares: access to performances is free of charge. Only food and drinks at stalls and purchases at commercial establishments are paid.
