The patronal feast of Sammichele di Bari: a blend of faith, brass bands, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Sammichele di Bari, a town in the heart of Puglia's Metropolitan City of Bari, the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Vitus the Martyr is much more than a religious observance: it is a defining community event that brings everyone together. It is no coincidence that the village bears the name of its protector, the Archangel Michael, who is venerated alongside the co-patron Saint Vitus the Martyr. Each year, in the first half of May, coinciding with the solemnity of the Apparitions of Saint Michael, the streets of the historic center come alive with the faithful, dazzling light displays, and the sound of brass bands.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Mother Church, the starting point for processions and the site of the most solemn liturgies. The religious program spans several days, featuring the preparatory novena, a concelebrated Mass presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, as well as rosaries and prayers to the Virgin Mary. A highly anticipated moment is the handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint by the Mayor—a symbolic gesture entrusting the community to Saint Michael's protection. Processions carry the statues of Saint Michael the Archangel and, in the evening, Saint Vitus the Martyr through the streets before returning to the Mother Church.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the secular festivities offer all the charm of traditional Puglian celebrations. Processions are accompanied by renowned brass bands from across the region, while Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Corso Vittorio Emanuele light up with artistic illuminations and host a bustling street market. Evenings are filled with shows, band concerts, and cabaret, culminating in a grand fireworks display that lights up the town sky. Photographic exhibitions, stalls, and an amusement park make the festival a perfect gathering spot for all ages.
Located in the Murgia hinterland south of Bari, Sammichele di Bari is also famous for its culinary tradition centered on zampina, a typical grilled sausage. Experiencing the patronal feast means immersing yourself in the authentic folk culture of Puglia, where faith, folklore, and conviviality meet. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; the festival traditionally takes place in the first half of May, around the anniversary of the Apparitions of Saint Michael.
