Celebrating the patron saint of Taviano in the heart of Salento

The Patronal Feast of Saint Martin of Tours is the most cherished identity-defining event in Taviano, a town in the province of Lecce, in the lower Salento region of Puglia. Every year in November, the entire community gathers around its patron saint for three days that weave together religious devotion, folklore, music, and conviviality. The cult of Saint Martin dates back at least to the 15th century, the era when the Mother Church dedicated to him was built, later restored during the 17th century.
The highlight is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, culminating in Piazza San Martino, where the statue of the saint is carried in triumph amidst the participation of the faithful. Surrounding the religious rite is a grand popular festival: Piazza San Martino and Piazza del Popolo are illuminated by spectacular artistic light displaysโamong the most admired in the Salento traditionโbecoming a stage for concerts, performances, and community gatherings.
The soundtrack of the festival is provided by grand brass band concerts, an essential element of patronal feasts in Southern Italy, with ensembles from Taviano and other Puglian towns performing in the bandstand. The evenings also feature concerts by artists from the Salento music scene and folk performers, live shows, and a highly anticipated fireworks display that lights up the town's sky.
The gourmet heart of the event is the food and wine trail that winds through the streets of the center to Piazza del Popolo: here, visitors can taste traditional peasant products, from new wine to roasted chestnuts, and from pittule to classic Salento dishes. The feast of Saint Martin on November 11th coincides with the tradition of the new wine, as the ancient saying goes: "On Saint Martin's Day, every must becomes wine."
The festivities are completed by a market fair that continues in the following days with stalls selling local products and handicrafts, a funfair for families and children, and floral displays curated by the masters of the Taviano Flower Festival. The Saint Martin Feast thus represents a distillation of the identity of the Municipality of Taviano and the festive culture of Puglia, where the sacred and the profane coexist in one great community celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Martin of Tours in Taviano is expected, as every year, in the month of November, coinciding with the patron saint's feast day. At this time, the official dates and program have not yet been released by the Festival Committee and the municipal administration. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
